World Darts Championship 2024/25 schedule on Tuesday: Day Three Order of Play and Preview
The action continues thick and fast at the World Darts Championship on Tuesday with a host of household names taking to the Ally Pally stage.
Another unmissable double session rounds off the opening weekend of the sport’s showpiece, with six First Round ties and two Second Round clashes on the bill.
The afternoon session sees reigning World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker get his campaign under way against Luke Woodhouse.
De Decker has proved to be one of the stand-out stories of 2024, storming to his first major title in the double-start event in Leicester in October.
The Belgian star, who also picked up a Players Championship title earlier in the year, is seeded at Ally Pally for the first time as he bids to surpass the Second Round stage for the first time in five attempts.
Woodhouse embarked on a career-best run to the semi-finals of a ranked major for the first time in October in addition to reaching two Players Championship semi-finals.
He kicked off his Ally Pally campaign with a commanding straight sets win over Lourence Ilagan on Monday and will be keen to pick up from where he left off.
Kevin Doets is eyeing a shot at revenge when he faces debutant Noa-Lynn van Leuven, with 2023 World Champion Michael Smith awaiting the winner in Round Two.
Doets was denied by Smith on the opening night of last year’s World Championship in an epic contest which saw him lead 2-1 and land nine 180s before eventually being edge out in a deciding set.
Van Leuven is one of 14 debutants in this year’s tournament and is making history as the first transgender participant in a PDC World Championship.
A winner of four Women’s Series titles and a Challenge Tour title in 2024, Van Leuven made her debut in November’s Grand Slam, losing out to Michael van Gerwen, Gary Anderson and Ryan Joyce.
Joyce kicks off his World Championship campaign with a tricky test against the returning Darius Labanauskas.
Joyce is the highest ranked non-seed in the draw and has enjoyed a superb season, reaching the semi-finals of the World Grand Prix and the quarter-finals of the Players Championship Finals, as well as reaching a ProTour final.
Like Joyce, Lithuanian star Labanauskas has also previously reached the quarter-finals of the PDC World Championship (2019/20) and put his name into the history books by landing a nine-darter on this stage against De Decker in 2021.
The opening match of the afternoon sees James Hurrell mark his debut with a tie against Canada’s Jim Long.
Hurrell has made four appearances in the BDO/WDF World Championship, reaching the quarter-finals in 2022, and has reached three ProTour quarter-finals in his debut year as a Tour Card holder.
Long, 56, reached the semi-finals of this year’s World Seniors Championship at the Circus Tavern and booked a first Ally Pally appearance since 2018/19 by picking up two CDC titles this season.
The evening session sees two-time World Champion Peter Wright open up against back-to-back World Masters champion Wesley Plaisier.
Wright comes into the competition in his lowest seeding position (17) in more than a decade after a tough year on the oche which has seen him fail to reach a televised ranking quarter-final for the first time since 2011.
The colourful Scot finished bottom of the Premier League table and has suffered opening round exits in each of his last five televised ranking tournaments, seeing him drop out of the world’s top 16 for the first time since 2012.
It has proven to be feast or famine for ‘Snakebite’ at Ally Pally in recent years, winning the title in 2020 and 2022, but suffering Second Round exits in 2018, 2019 and 2024.
Plaisier secured his place in the event via the ProTour Order of Merit despite being a non Tour Card holder, courtesy of his terrific campaign as a top-up, which included a maiden Players Championship title in October.
The Dutchman has also enjoyed a fruitful year on the WDF circuit, regaining the World Masters title and finishing runner-up in the Dutch Open, and battled his way to a 3-2 victory over Japan’s Ryusei Azemoto on Monday afternoon.
Meanwhile, ‘queen of the palace’ Fallon Sherrock aims to recapture her history-making exploits when she returns to the Ally Pally stage to face Ryan Meikle, with a showdown against Luke Littler at stake.
Sherrock became the first female to defeat a man in a World Championship when she overcame first Ted Evetts then Mensur Suljovic on her debut in 2019, but has failed to register a win in her three subsequent appearances.
The 2022 Women’s World Matchplay champion has picked up three PDC Women’s Series titles in 2024 to secure her place in this event and will be determined to create more headlines.
Meikle has reached the Second Round in successive visits to Ally Pally, losing out to Peter Wright in 2022 and Raymond van Barneveld in 2023, and enjoyed a superb win over Gary Anderson in the recent Players Championship Finals.
Former German Championship Ricardo Pietreczko comes up against emerging Chinese star Xiaochen Zong.
Pietreczko was involved in a thrilling encounter with Luke Humphries in last year’s Third Round, leading 3-1 in sets before eventually going down 4-3 to the eventual champion.
Runner-up in this year’s Flanders Darts Trophy, ‘Pikachu’ was a quarter-finalist at the European Championship and is set to receive a warm reception from the large German contingent in the crowd.
Zong, 26, won the PDC China Championship to confirm a fourth appearance in the World Championship as he bids for an historic first win on this stage.
Jeffrey de Graaf aims to avoid a huge banana skin when he meets debutant qualifier Rashad Sweeting.
Dutch-born De Graaf, who now resides in Sweden, picked up three PDC Nordic & Baltic Tour titles to clinch a fourth appearance in this event, having lost out 4-2 to Rob Cross in last year’s Third Round.
Sweeting is making history as the first player from the Bahamas to qualify for the PDC World Championship after topping the Latin America and Caribbean Order of Merit.
The action gets under way from 12.30pm GMT, with First Round and Second Round matches to be contested over the best five sets, best of five legs per set.
The tie break rule does not apply to First Round matches, meaning the fifth leg of a deciding set would be sudden death, while the final set in matches from Round Two onwards must be won by two clear legs, unless the score reaches 5-5, in which case a sudden death leg will be played.
