Jermaine Wattimena pulled off a straight sets rout of James Wade in Round Two of the World Darts Championship on Monday, as Gerwyn Price powered past Keane Barry.

Wattimena followed up his opening night rout of Stefan Bellmont with another emphatic 3-0 success on Day Two at Alexandra Palace as he ensured Wade became the first seed to bow out of this year’s showpiece.

The rapid Dutchman punished an uncharacteristically poor display on the doubles from Wade to prevail with a 99.2 average and 50 per cent on the outer ring.

“I believe I can beat anyone at the moment, so I think I can create some history,” reflected the European Championship runner-up.

“I’ve been playing really well over the last few months, and mentally I think I am a lot stronger than I was a few years ago.

“I’m over the moon with my performance. It was a good day for me, so I am more than happy!”

Price, meanwhile, was also on hand to punish a disastrous display of doubling from his opponent as he swept aside Keane Barry by the same scoreline to reach Round Three.

The 2021 World Champion dropped just two legs as he seized upon a staggering 22 missed darts at doubles from the Irish youngster.

“I know how well I can play. I just want to prove to myself that I’ve still got it,” admitted Price.

“I’ve given myself a boost of confidence with the way I’ve played in exhibitions over the last few weeks, but this is where I want to perform, on the biggest stages in the biggest events.

“I put myself under a lot of pressure tonight because I wanted to go home and enjoy Christmas with a win, and this is where the tournament really starts for me.”

Connor Scutt produced the stand-out performance of the tournament so far to sweep aside Ben Robb in straight sets with a 102 average.

Challenge Tour star Scutt landed a brace of ton-plus checkouts and converted 56 per cent of his double attempts to move through to a Second Round meeting with Damon Heta.

“Me and Damon have been practice partners over the last few weeks,” revealed Scutt, a quarter-finalist at last month’s Players Championship Finals.

“It should be a great game. It will be nice to play a friendly face up there.

“I just love playing up on that stage. I have learnt an awful lot from my last two [televised] tournaments, and hopefully I can build on that here.”

Leonard Gates will go head-to-head with Nathan Aspinall on Wednesday evening following a 3-1 win over a visibly emotional Cameron Menzies.

Gates, the reigning CDC Continental Cup champion, landed checkouts of 120, 136 and 122 as he saw off a struggling Menzies – who held back the tears during the latter stages of the contest.

Meanwhile, Luke Woodhouse kicked off his campaign with a 3-0 rout of Filipino star Lourence Ilagan.

Woodhouse was clinical in the early stages, winning the opening seven legs without reply, before halting a brief rally from Ilagan midway through set three to wrap up proceedings.

Robert Owen recovered from a sluggish start to see off Niels Zonneveld, landing a brilliant 121 checkout to celebrate his first win on the Ally Pally stage, having lost the opening set.

Kai Gotthardt enjoyed an eventful World Championship debut, remarkably snapping the barrel of his dart during the opening set of his tie against Alan Soutar, before going on to complete a superb comeback victory.

Gotthardt, winner of the PDC Europe Super League in November, outscored the Scot for large periods, reeling off seven consecutive legs on his way to victory.

Wesley Plaisier also prevailed on his World Championship debut after battling through a five-set marathon against Japan’s Ryusei Azemoto in Monday’s opener.

Plaisier, winner of a Players Championship event in October, won six straight legs from 2-1 adrift to set up a meeting with two-time World Champion Peter Wright in Round Two.
