The World Darts Championship continues on Wednesday evening with four tasty ties at Alexandra Palace.
Nathan Aspinall is the seeded star in action on Day Four as he takes on American ace Leonard Gates.
Aspinall will be keen to atone for last year’s straight sets defeat at the hands of Ricky Evans in Round Two and put his disappointing recent record at Ally Pally to bed.
Semi-finalist in each of his first two appearances in 2019 and 2020, Aspinall has not made it beyond the Third Round since and comes into his seventh World Championship on the back of a difficult season.
The two-time major champion missed ten weeks of the campaign due to injury and failed to qualify for the Grand Slam, while also failing to reach the quarter-finals of a televised ranking tournament for the first time since 2018.
Gates finished top of the CDC rankings to clinch a second PDC World Championship appearance, winning the Continental Cup to add to his trio of World Seniors televised titles in 2023.
The 54-year-old defeated an emotional Cameron Menzies 3-1 in Monday’s opening round and will be eyeing a huge scalp upon his return to the stage.
The opening match of the night sees former BDO world finalist Jim Williams take on Paolo Nebrida of the Philippines.
Williams, a former ProTour event winner, is making his fourth consecutive PDC World Championship appearance, having notably defeated Peter Wright 3-0 en route to the Third Round last year.
The Welshman’s first test comes in the shape of Asian Tour star Nebrida – winner of four titles this year – who lost out to Simon Whitlock in a deciding set 12 months ago.
Crowd favourite Ricky Evans hopes to put on a show once again when he faces Australia’s Gordon Mathers.
Evans reached his first major ranking semi-final at the UK Open in March and has made the Third Round in three of his last five visits to Ally Pally.
Mathers, who held a Tour Card from 2021-2022, claimed the DPA Oceanic Masters title to secure a fourth World Championship appearance, returning for the first time in three years.
Latvian number one Madars Razma and former BDO World Champion Christian Kist collide for the right to face Dirk van Duijvenbode in Round Two.
Razma is making his sixth successive PDC World Championship appearance, having reached a semi-final on both the European Tour and ProTour this year.
Kist, Lakeside champion 2012, was beaten by eventual runner-up Luke Littler in last year’s opening round, and registered his only win at Ally Pally from five previous outings in 2016 when he defeated Justin Pipe.
The action gets under way from 7pm GMT, with First Round and Second Round matches to be contested over the best five sets, best of five legs per set.
The tie break rule does not apply to First Round matches, meaning the fifth leg of a deciding set would be sudden death, while the final set in matches from Round Two onwards must be won by two clear legs, unless the score reaches 5-5, in which case a sudden death leg will be played.
