World Seniors Matchplay 2023 Draw | Phil Taylor to face John Part in York
The draw for the 2023 World Seniors Matchplay has been confirmed, with Phil Taylor and John Part set to renew their rivalry in York.
The second staging of the televised over-50s event features 16 players battling it out at the York Barbican from September 2-3.
Among the stand-out ties of the opening round is a show-down between 16-time World Champion Taylor and three-time World Champion Part.
The pair met in two PDC World Championship finals, including an epic at the Circus Tavern 20 years ago which Part won in a 13th set decider to avenge his defeat two years earlier.
Taylor, who remains in pursuit of a maiden World Seniors title, is seeded number three in the draw, having lost in the Quarter-Finals of all three televised events so far this year.
Robert Thornton, who defeated Taylor 12-10 in last year’s World Seniors Matchplay final to claim the crown, starts his title defence against reigning WDF World Champion Neil Duff.
Thornton is the reigning and back-to-back World Seniors champion and notably defeated Duff in the Quarter-Finals en route to glory at the Circus Tavern in February.
Elsewhere, second seed Leonard Gates starts his quest for a third consecutive televised World Seniors title when he faces Northern Ireland’s Colin McGarry.
American ace Gates has picked up the Champion of Champions and World Seniors Masters titles this year and faces Order of Merit qualifier McGarry – who was a quarter-finalist in this event last year.
Former World Cup of Darts winner John Henderson marks his televised Seniors debut with a tie against 2022 World Seniors Masters champion David Cameron.
Three-time BDO World Champion and former Premier League winner Glen Durrant has been drawn to face debutant qualifier Jim McEwan.
Scott Mitchell, the 2015 BDO World Champion, comes up against Paul Hogan – who progressed through the final qualifying event in Reading on Sunday.
Three-time BDO World Champion Martin Adams faces former Players Champion Kevin Painter in another box office battle.
Richie Howson, runner-up in all three televised Seniors events this year, starts his latest quest for silverware with a show-down against ten-time Women’s World Champion Trina Gulliver MBE.
