World Seniors Matchplay 2023 Odds | Henderson favourite for debut glory
John Henderson has been installed as the favourite to claim the World Seniors Matchplay title on his televised seniors debut in York.
The second staging of the over-50s major will feature 16 players battling it out at the York Barbican from September 2-3.
A high quality field includes six former World Champions and a host of recent PDC Tour Card holders as they vie for the £10,000 top prize in the final televised seniors event of the year.
Henderson, who turned 50 in May, is bidding to claim seniors glory at the first time of asking and is the 4/1 favourite with Bet365 to triumph at the Barbican.
The former World Cup of Darts winner, who dropped off the PDC circuit last year, has enjoyed an impressive resurgence in 2023, picking up a Challenge Tour title and featuring in a number of ProTour events.
The popular Scot has been handed a tough opening tie against 2022 World Seniors Masters champion David Cameron – who is priced at 14/1 to replicate last year’s fairy-tale triumph at Lakeside.
Leonard Gates is eyeing a hat-trick of seniors silverware and is the 5/1 second favourite to continue his sensational winning run this season.
The American star secured the Champion of Champions title in March before adding the World Seniors Masters crown in June and will open up against Northern Ireland’s Colin McGarry.
Reigning champion Robert Thornton, the most decorated player since the inception of the seniors tour, follows in the market at 6/1 to successfully defend the title.
Thornton defeated Phil Taylor 12-10 in last year’s final in Hull and has since retained the World Seniors Championship title this year.
16-time World Champion Taylor remains in pursuit of an elusive maiden seniors title and is 11/1 to open his account in Yorkshire.
Richie Howson has lost in all three televised finals on the World Seniors circuit this year and is 13/2 to stop the rot here, having been drawn to face ten-time Women’s World Champion Trina Gulliver MBE in Round One.
Jim McEwan will make his long-awaited debut in a televised seniors event after coming through the qualifiers in July, and the veteran Scot is 10/1 to claim the crown.
McEwan starts out against three-time BDO World Champion and 2020 Premier League champion Glen Durrant – who is 100/1 to recapture his brilliant best and return to the winner’s enclosure.
Scott Mitchell, the 2015 BDO World Champion and former PDC Tour Card holder, is well-fancied 7/1 to go the distance in York, while former Players Champion Kevin Painter is 12/1 to lift the trophy.
Current WDF World Champion Neil Duff is a well-fancied each-way selection at 14/1, while qualifier Paul Hogan – who turned 60 earlier in the week – is 28/1 to add his name to the roll of honour.
Three-time World Champion John Part, who faces his former rival Taylor in Round One, is a 33/1 outsider, while Deta Hedman – who replaces Martin Adams in the line-up – is priced at 200/1.
