Shane McGuirk seals WDF World Championship title to end Paul Lim’s dream

Shane McGuirk secured an historic first Lakeside crown as he defeated Paul Lim 6-3 to win the 2024 WDF World Championship on Sunday.
McGuirk denied 70-year-old Lim a fairy-tale triumph at Frimley Green as he held off a spirited fightback to clinch the £50,000 top prize.
The 29-year-old becomes the first player from the Republic of Ireland to win a World Championship title, dropping just three sets in the process.
McGuirk came into the final with a flawless record in his debut Lakeside campaign and extended his remarkable run to 21 sets won without reply as he raced into a 4-0 lead.
Lim, however, hit back to claim three of the next four sets and close the gap to 5-3, but McGuirk was not to be deterred as he ended any hopes of a miraculous comeback and sealed victory with a 90.3 average.
“I’m absolutely speechless, I couldn’t be more relieved to hit that tops [for the match],” said McGuirk.
“He put me under pressure, he switched to the 19s and he just couldn’t stop hitting them.
“I just kept thinking to myself ‘you have the lead, just keep going and eventually it will come’ and luckily it did come for me at the end there.
“I’ve never been in the final before so I felt like it could go one of two ways, I could be shaking like a leaf or I could get on with the job in hand.
“I can’t believe what has just happened.”
Lim enjoyed a sensational run to a first final in what was 27th World Championship appearance since making his debut at Lakeside in 1982.
The Singapore Slinger, who came through three last-set deciders en route to the final, said: “I want to thank all the fans who have supported me this week, they have been amazing.
“I was down but I never gave up, and that’s what we do in life, never give up. I’ll be here next year.”
Meanwhile, Beau Greaves made it a hat-trick of Women’s World Championship titles as she defeated Scotland’s Sophie McKinlay 4-1 in the final.
Greaves maintained her incredible unbeaten run on the Lakeside stage as she recovered from a set down to deny 18-year-old McKinlay.
The Doncaster darter joins Trina Gulliver as only the second player to win three consecutive Women’s World Championships and picks up the £25,000 top prize.
McKinlay had also featured in the Girls’ final earlier in the evening – where she was beaten in straight sets by 16-year-old Paige Pauling.
Elsewhere, 15-year-old Archie Self took glory in the Boys’ World Championship as he edged out 18-year-old Jenson Walker 3-2.
