Paul Lim and Shane McGuirk will battle it out for the right to be crowned 2024 WDF World Champion at Lakeside on Sunday.

An historic men’s final sees 70-year-old Lim bidding to become the sport’s oldest World Champion, while McGuirk aims to become the first player from the Republic of Ireland to triumph in a World Championship.

Lim has rolled back the years in extraordinary fashion in what is his 27th appearance in a World Championship since making his debut on this iconic stage back in 1982.

His previous best performance saw him reach the quarter-finals in 1990 – the year he landed the first, and to date, only, televised nine-darter at Lakeside.

The Singapore Slinger has spent more than five hours of playing time on stage this week, commencing with a straight sets win over Dutch youngster Moreno Blom, before coming through a trio of nail-biting last-set deciders against Hong Kong’s Kai Fan Leung, tenth seed Gary Stone and Dutch Open champion Jarno Bottenberg.

The World Cup of Darts stalwart then pulled off an emphatic 5-0 whitewash of 11th seed Jason Brandon in Saturday’s semi-finals, sealing victory with a trademark bull finish.

Lim is now looking to complete the fairy-tale by defying the odds once again to be crowned Lakeside Champion in what could be his final appearance in a World Championship to bring the curtain down on an illustrious career spanning six decades.

Standing in the way of Lim and the crown is an opponent 31 years his junior – who has sensationally stormed his way through to the final without dropping a set.

McGuirk has enjoyed a dream debut campaign at Lakeside, reeling off a staggering 17 sets without reply to much within touching distance of the £50,000 top prize.

The PDC Challenge Tour star began by defeating veteran Mark Barilli in Round One, before averaging 96 in a 3-0 rout of Sweden’s Edwin Torbjörnsson.

McGuirk then swept aside Australian duo Brandon Weening and Peter Machin, before whitewashing François Schweyen 5-0 with his fourth 90+ average of the week.

The 2023 Irish Open winner has the opportunity to become the first player ever to win a World Championship title (BDO, PDC or WDF) without dropping a set, with John Part (1994 BDO) and Phil Taylor (2001 PDC) holding the joint record of just one set dropped.

The final gets under way from around 8pm GMT and will be contested over the best of 11 sets.
