The draw for the 2022 Betfred World Matchplay has been made, with Michael van Gerwen versus Adrian Lewis among the stand-out ties.

The prestigious ranking major will see the world’s top stars battle it out for a record £800,000 prize fund at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool from July 16-24.

The top 16 players from the PDC Order of Merit are seeded in the draw and are joined by 16 qualifiers from the ProTour Order of Merit.

A repeat of two previous World Matchplay Semi-Finals sees multiple World Champions Van Gerwen and Lewis go head-to-head in the opening round.

Van Gerwen claimed Matchplay glory in 2015 and 2016, while Lewis picked up his first ranking title since 2019 during last week’s Players Championships.

Top seed Peter Wright will begin the defence of his title against Latvia’s Madars Razma – one of four debutants in this year’s field.

Another notable encounter sees four-time European Tour event winner Luke Humphries take on former UK Open champion Nathan Aspinall.

Masters champion and Premier League finalist Joe Cullen faces a tough opener against Australia’s World Cup winner Damon Heta, while 2018 champion Gary Anderson faces two-time major winner – Daryl Gurney.

World number two Gerwyn Price has been drawn to face German debutant Martin Schindler, while Jonny Clayton meets Austrian newcomer Rowby-John Rodriguez.

James Wade, the 2007 champion, will host debutant Martin Lukeman – runner-up on the European Tour earlier this season.

World finalist Michael Smith takes on a resurgent Andrew Gilding – making his return to Blackpool for the first time since 2015.

Rob Cross, the 2019 champion, starts out against Chris Dobey, while former Grand Slam champion Jose de Sousa faces German number one Gabriel Clemens.

Recent ProTour event winners Danny Noppert and Brendan Dolan will go head-to-head, while 2020 champion Dimitri Van den Bergh faces Callan Rydz – quarter-finalist a year ago.

Recent ProTour event winner Dirk van Duijvenbode, the number 14 seed, will play former Players Championship Finals runner-up Ryan Searle, as Krzysztof Ratajski, last year’s semi-finalist, takes on former Lakeside champion Stephen Bunting.

The full schedule of play will be confirmed in due course.
