The Second Round action commences at the 2024 World Grand Prix in Leicester on Wednesday, with a host of major champions among the line-up.
The opening round of the annual double-start tournament saw eight of the world’s top 16 players crash out, including six-time champion Michael van Gerwen and former World Champions Michael Smith and Peter Wright.
The stakes and format increase from the Last 16 onwards as the big guns aim to make their move into the latter stages at the Mattioli Arena.
Reigning champion Luke Humphries steps up the defence of his title with a clash against German star Ricardo Pietreczko.
Humphries is bidding to become only the third player in the history of the tournament (behind Phil Taylor and Van Gerwen) to successfully defend this title and began by completing a remarkable comeback in Round One.
The world number one recovered from a set and two legs down to stun Stephen Bunting in a decider on Monday, maintaining his record of having surpassed the First Round of every major ranking tournament since the 2022 World Grand Prix.
Humphries now comes up against a player he defeated en route to World Championship glory at Ally Pally, as well as July’s World Matchplay.
Pietreczko led three sets to one in their Last 32 tie at Ally Pally before being soundly beaten 10-4 in Blackpool, and ‘Pikachu’ will be eyeing a dose of revenge in an effort to reach his first major quarter-final.
The 29-year-old dumped out five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld in a deciding set on Monday and has returned to form in recent months despite an injury problem which caused him to pull out of a European Tour event mid-match.
The opening match of the evening sees 2022 World Grand Prix runner-up Nathan Aspinall face multiple ProTour event winner Ryan Joyce.
Aspinall has recently returned to competitive action following a ten-week break due to an elbow injury, and the tenacious Stockport thrower dug deep to deny Ryan Searle in a deciding set on Day One.
Joyce, meanwhile, marked his return to this event for the first time since 2020 with an impressive straight sets defeat of world number 16 Josh Rock.
Jonny Clayton, the 2021 World Grand Prix champion, comes up against former European Champion Ross Smith in the final fixture of the evening.
Clayton, who claimed a Players Championship title in July and was runner-up in the Dutch Darts Championship, overcame debutant Ritchie Edhouse in straight sets to provisionally climb back up to sixth in the live Order of Merit.
Smith, twice a runner-up on the European Tour this season, recorded the first ton-plus average in this tournament since 2021 and the ninth highest in the event’s history (101.79) as he stormed past Gian van Veen in successive sets.
Former World Champion Rob Cross looks to break new ground at the Grand Prix when he faces German number one Martin Schindler.
Cross has failed to surpass the Second Round stage in seven previous appearances in this event but started superbly by knocking out Premier League champion Luke Littler in a deciding set on Monday.
Schindler, on the other hand, is aiming to reach his second successive quarter-final in Leicester, having comfortably seen off 2011 finalist Brendan Dolan in straight sets.
Having picked up two European Tour titles this season, ‘The Wall’ is closing in on a place in the world’s top 16 for the first time.
The action gets under way from 7pm BST, with Second Round matches to be contested over the best of five sets.
