Niels Zonneveld claims maiden European Tour title at the Dutch Darts Championship
Niels Zonneveld secured his first European Tour title in dream fashion on home soil at the Dutch Darts Championship with an 8-5 victory over Danny Noppert in the final.
Zonneveld, who had featured in two previous European Tour semi-finals earlier in the season, marked a major milestone in his breakthrough year by scooping the £35,000 top prize in Maastricht.
The left-hander, who was unseeded in the draw, came through two last-leg deciders en route to the final – where he battled past his Dutch compatriot Noppert in a hard-fought contest.
The victory sees him become the first Dutch winner of the tournament and crucially clinch a debut appearance in next month’s Grand Slam.
“It’s still a dream, I can’t believe it!” said Zonneveld.
“I think the final was not that good, but we had a long day behind us. All respect to Danny – I think he will win many more.
“The 157 was a really important shot, because I was getting nervous! It was my first final, so I can’t blame myself.
“I have to enjoy this moment, I know that. It’s just a dream come true.”
It was Noppert who started the final the brighter, establishing an early 2-0 lead, but only for Zonneveld to hit back with five legs on the spin to take command.
Noppert stopped the rot with an 89 checkout on the bullseye before reducing the deficit to 5-4, but a pivotal 157 checkout saw Zonneveld regain a two-leg lead.
After moving one leg away, Zonneveld squandered a match dart to allow Noppert to peg back to 7-5 behind, though a nerveless 12-leg break of throw saw the 28-year-old close out a memorable triumph.
Having opened up with a 6-4 win over Mike De Decker in Friday’s opening round, Zonneveld then edged out Krzysztof Ratajski in a deciding leg on Saturday, before reeling off three legs on the spin from 4-3 down to stun Gerwyn Price in the Last 16.
He then survived a match dart from Wessel Nijman, again reeling off three legs in a row to snatch victory with a 102.5 average, before overcoming a below-par Stephen Bunting 7-4 in the semi-finals.
Noppert was forced to settle for second prize for the fifth time on the European Tour since 2022, averaging 87.6 in a low-key final display.
“He is a deserved winner,” conceded Noppert, who is still yet to qualify for the Grand Slam next month.
“I had a chance for my first European Tour title, but he deserved it.
“I always have positive feelings. I always believe in myself and trust in myself.”
The number five seed registered a hat-trick of ton-plus averages en route to the semi-finals, defeating Dave Chisnall, Jermaine Wattimena and Luke Woodhouse.
Having averaged 113.4 in a blistering 6-2 rout of Woodhouse, Noppert then secured his spot in the final courtesy of a 7-5 success over Gian van Veen.
A landmark weekend for Van Veen saw him set a new European Tour record average of 120.24 in Saturday’s Last 16 whitewash of Sebastian Bialecki.
The world number three followed that up with commanding wins over Brendan Dolan and Ryan Searle, but remains in search of an elusive maiden European Tour title.
Van Veen was joined in the semi-finals by Bunting – who defeated Cameron Menzies, Nathan Aspinall and Damon Heta along the way, confirming his qualification for next week’s European Championship in the process.
