Luke Humphries and Mike De Decker go head-to-head for the right to be crowned 2024 World Grand Prix champion in Leicester on Sunday.
An historic final lies in wait as Humphries bids to become only the third player to successfully defend this title, while De Decker vies to become the latest new name on the trophy.
Humphries is following in the footsteps of giant, with only Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen having ever retained the crown in the 26-year history of the double-start event.
The world number one landed his first major title here 12 months ago, kick-starting a remarkable spell of dominance which has also seen him clinch the Grand Slam, Players Championship Finals, World Championship and World Matchplay titles.
He is now appearing in a sensational sixth consecutive televised ranking final, having won four of his last five, and has extended his unbeaten run at the Grand Prix to nine matches.
Humphries had to survive a huge scare in the opening round as he came from a set and two legs down to stun Stephen Bunting, before defeating Ricardo Pietreczko and Jonny Clayton by 3-1 scorelines.
The Newbury ace then produced statistically his best-ever performance in this format, averaging 100.3 in a 5-0 demolition of Ryan Joyce in Saturday’s semi-finals with eight 180s and four ton-plus finishes to boot.
Standing between Humphries a first major title defence is a player with whom he progressed through the Development Tour ranks and who has enjoyed the best week of his career to date.
De Decker has already made history by becoming the first Belgian to reach the final of the World Grand Prix and has done so in terrific fashion, dropping just three sets along the way.
De Decker had previously never made it beyond the Last 32 of a televised ranking event but his ground-breaking run in Leicester has seen him surge into the world’s top 32 for the first time.
The four-time Development Tour event winner, who claimed his first Players Championship title this season, has transferred his clinical floor form onto the big stage to pull off a quartet of superb scalps.
Having survived a match dart against Damon Heta in Round One, he swept aside two-time World Champion Gary Anderson and two-time World Grand Prix champion James Wade, before powering past his Belgian compatriot Dimitri van den Bergh 5-2.
De Decker is now out to emulate Van den Bergh by becoming the second Belgian to pick up a PDC major title and defeat Humphries in a final as his fellow countryman did in March’s UK Open.
The final gets under way from 8pm BST and will be contested over the best of 11 sets.
