Michael van Gerwen doubtful for Premier League Darts trip to Glasgow
Michael van Gerwen could miss Night Three of Premier League Darts in Glasgow on Thursday through illness.
Van Gerwen sits top of the BetMGM Premier League table with eight points from a possible ten, having claimed the Night One title in Newcastle before finishing runner-up in Antwerp last week.
The seven-time Premier League champion is due to face reigning World Champion Luke Littler in this week’s quarter-finals at the OVO Hydro, but may be forced to pull out.
Van Gerwen’s close friend Vincent van der Voort revealed concerns over Van Gerwen’s current condition, admitting on the Darts Draait Door podcast: “Unfortunately, we still don’t know for sure if Michael will play.
“He’s picked something up and is on antibiotics. I can’t say yet that he’ll be there. We’ll have to wait and see over the coming days.
“Tests are being done, and I hope they find it quickly so it can be resolved. There’s a chance he won’t be there.
“Everything is uncertain for now. Every time you think it’s turning the right way, something happens again.”
The PDC have subsequently released the following statement: “Michael has a medical issue and is awaiting results of tests which will determine whether he can travel to Glasgow.”
Van Gerwen defeated Littler 6-4 with a 100.7 average in last week’s semi-finals, leaving the world number one outside of the top four in the early standings.
Should MVG withdraw from Night Three, Littler would receive a bye through to the semi-finals to face either Jonny Clayton or last week’s winner Gerwyn Price.
