Players Championship Finals 2024 | Day One Preview and Order of Play
The 2024 Players Championship Finals commences in Minehead on Friday with 32 matches to be held across two stages.
The penultimate major ranking tournament of the year sees the top 64 players from the Players Championship Order of Merit competing for the £120,000 top prize at Butlins Minehead.
An unmissable double-session kicks off proceedings on Day One as a host of star names bid to avert an early exit and fine-tune their preparations for next month’s World Championship.
The afternoon session includes a showdown between 2016 finalist Dave Chisnall and former Masters champion Joe Cullen on the Main Stage, with both looking to put an indifferent run of form behind them.
Ten-time major winner James Wade, an ever-present in this event since its inaugural staging back in 2009, opens up against three-time Challenge Tour event winner Stephen Burton – who reached the Last 16 of this competition in 2018.
A repeat of last month’s European Championship semi-final sees Luke Woodhouse bidding for revenge over eventual champion Ritchie Edhouse, while two-time European Tour event winner Martin Schindler meets former World Grand Prix finalist Brendan Dolan.
Grand Slam quarter-finalist Gian van Veen – who will also feature in Sunday’s World Youth Championship final – starts out against last year’s World Championship semi-finalist Scott Williams.
Ryan Searle, runner-up here three years ago, takes on Sweden’s Jeffrey de Graaf, while last week’s Grand Slam of Darts runner-up Martin Lukeman faces Challenge Tour Order of Merit winner Connor Scutt – who also made his debut in Wolverhampton last week.
The afternoon’s Stage Two line-up includes a clash between Players Championship event winner Wessel Nijman against Kim Huybrechts – runner-up in this event back in 2012.
European Championship finalist Jermaine Wattimena looks to maintain his blistering run of form when he faces ProTour event winner Alan Soutar, while former UK Open champion Andrew Gilding faces Dutch ace Kevin Doets.
Wesley Plaisier, winner of a ProTour event this year despite being a non Tour Card holder, takes on Austrian icon Mensur Suljovic, as former World Grand Prix finalist Dirk van Duijvenbode plays multiple ranking event winner Callan Rydz.
Cameron Menzies, winner of a maiden ProTour title in recent months and a quarter-finalist in the recent Grand Slam, faces former BDO world finalist Jim Williams in another stand-out tie.
Newly-crowned Grand Slam champion Luke Littler marks his Players Championship Finals debut with a clash against 2022 finalist Rob Cross.
Littler secured his first televised ranking title in emphatic fashion last weekend and will be keen to pick up from where he left off in Wolverhampton as he returns to the scene of his eye-catching World Youth Championship triumph 12 months ago.
Luke Humphries launched the defence of his crown with a tie against German star Gabriel Clemens on the Main Stage.
Humphries is bidding to become only the second player in the history of this event to successfully retain the title and the world number one will be determined to bounce back from his shock Group Stage exit at the Grand Slam.
Michael van Gerwen has dominated this competition by racking up a staggering seven titles since 2013, and the world number two begins his latest campaign against 2019 semi-finalist Ian White.
Chris Dobey, the number one seed in the draw after claiming three ProTour titles this season, faces a formidable opener against two-time major winner Nathan Aspinall – who held on to the 64th and final qualification spot.
Two former holders of this title go head-to-head as 2018 winner Daryl Gurney takes on 2021 champion Peter Wright – who is looking to avoid a fifth consecutive opening round defeat in a televised ranking event.
Having failed to qualify for the recent Grand Slam, 2019 finalist Gerwyn Price returns to big stage action to face French number one Thibault Tricole.
2014 champion Gary Anderson, who was narrowly denied 16-15 by Littler in an epic Grand Slam semi-final last Sunday, looks to continue his terrific run of form when he faces Suffolk left-hander Ryan Meikle.
Former World Champion Michael Smith is among the headline acts on Stage Two as he faces emerging star Dom Taylor, while 2017 finalist Jonny Clayton starts out against Germany’s Florian Hempel.
World number 11 Damon Heta hosts 2020 runner-up Mervyn King, as five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld faces fellow Dutch thrower Chris Landman.
Masters champion Stephen Bunting meets Belgian veteran Mario Vandenbogaerde, while reigning World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker goes head-to-head with rapid Dutchman Richard Veenstra.
UK Open champion Dimitri van den Bergh faces a tough opener against former European Champion Ross Smith, while Dutch Championship winner Josh Rock plays ProTour event finalist Ricky Evans.
The action gets under way from 12.45pm GMT, with First Round matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
