Jose De Sousa made it back-to-back titles at PDC Super Series 4 with victory at Players Championship 15, edging out Ryan Searle 8-7 in the final.

De Sousa claimed his second PDC title of the season on Tuesday and followed up with a third just 24 hours later to continue his remarkable week at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.

The Grand Slam champion battled back from 7-5 down and survived one missed match dart from Searle to clinch the £10,000 top prize landing a record 34 maximums across the day.

“It feels great to win repeat titles,” said De Sousa. “It’s something I didn’t expect at all.

“Ryan played really well but he missed at the end and I punished him. It doesn’t make me happy to do that but that’s the game.

“I wouldn’t say players are scared of me now, but I would say they respect me as a player. I think I deserve that after all my hard work.”

De Sousa began the day with a 6-3 win over Jon Worsley before thrashing Rowby-John Rodriguez 6-1 with a 99 average in Round Two.

The Portuguese star then averaged 102 in a 6-2 win over Dutchman Kevin Doets and continued his clinical form by dispatching Jeff Smith 6-3 with a further ton-plus average.

A repeat of the recent Premier League final saw De Sousa face nemesis Jonny Clayton in the Quarter-Finals, and after the Welshman had squandered multiple match darts, ‘The Special One’ snatched a 6-5 win to remain on course.

De Sousa, who had averaged 127 on Monday, swept aside Rob Cross 7-2 with a blistering 112 average in the Semi-Finals.

The first eight legs of the final went with throw before Searle broke in style with a magnificent 161 checkout to move 5-4 ahead.

Searle then landed double four to go two clear, and though De Sousa replied with double 14 to close the gap, ‘Heavy Metal’ picked out double ten to move within a leg of victory at 7-5.

A spectacular 135 checkout saw De Sousa stay alive, and after Searle had wired the bull for the match in leg 14, the Premier League finalist broke throw with double ten to force a decider.

Searle was denied any further opportunity to clinch his second PDC ProTour title as De Sousa sealed victory in style with a 102 checkout.

Searle’s run to the final sees him launch himself back into the provisional ProTour Order of Merit qualification places for next month’s Betfred World Matchplay.

Searle, who is targeting a Winter Gardens debut in July, took the scalps of Gary Anderson and Joe Cullen en route to the final, but saw his bid for a second PDC ranking title fall just short.

Elsewhere on Day Three, Ian White hit the fourth nine-darter of Super Series 4 in a 6-4 Second Round defeat to Ron Meulenkamp.

Adrian Lewis continued his improved form with a first Players Championship Quarter-Final of the year, while Croatia’s Boris Krcmar reached the Last Eight for the first time in a ProTour event.

A resurgent Cross scored his first win over Michael van Gerwen in three years in the Quarter-Finals, extending Dutchman’s wait for a first title of 2021.

PDC Super Series 4 concludes on Thursday with Players Championship 16.
