Luke Littler is bidding to become the third debutant to reach the semis at the Aldersley Leisure Village this week, but faces a tricky test in the shape of a resurgent Jermaine Wattimena.
Littler was installed as clear favourite following the shock early exits of the likes of Luke Humphries and Michael van Gerwen and is closing in on a first PDC major ranking title.
The reigning Premier League and World Series Finals champion has swept into the Last Eight following four blistering displays with ton-plus averages in each, topping Group F for the combined loss of just four legs, before recovering from 9-7 down to edge out Mike De Decker in a thrilling Last 16 tie.
The 17-year-old notably defeated Wattimena in the quarter-finals on the Belgian Darts Open back in March – a tournament he went on to win with a nine-darter in the final.
Wattimena is enjoying by far the best spell of his career to date and continues to ride the crest of a wave after finishing runner-up in last month’s European Championship.
The Dutchman’s only previous televised ranking quarter-final prior to that had come at the World Grand Prix back in 2019, but he has now gone back-to-back courtesy of a host of superb wins.
Wattimena finished top of Group E with maximum points, defeating De Decker, Michael Smith and Mensur Suljovic, before battling past his stablemate Dimitri van den Bergh in a last-leg decider on Thursday.
Another unmissable contest sees two-time Grand Slam finalist Gary Anderson take on two-time World Youth finalist Gian van Veen.
Anderson is chasing a first major ranking title since the 2018 World Matchplay in an event he has long regarded as his favourite, having featured in 17 of its 18 stagings.
The Flying Scotsman has enjoyed another terrific year away from the major stages, winning the European Darts Grand Prix and two Players Championship events, but has brought that prolific floor form to Wolverhampton this week.
Anderson began by averaging 113.2 in a 5-1 rout of Ryan Joyce in Group G – which he topped following further wins over Van Gerwen and Noa-Lynn van Leuven.
The 53-year-old then saw off Masters champion Stephen Bunting 10-6 in the Last 16 with an average just shy of 100 and now meets Van Veen on a televised stage for the first time.
Van Veen has been arguably the stand-out performer of the tournament so far, registering a ton-plus average in each of his four wins en route to only his second televised ranking semi-final.
The 22-year-old fell just shy of setting a new tournament record average when he thrashed Stephen Bunting 5-1 with a 114.71, having opened Group H with a 110.4 average in defeating Josh Rock.
Van Veen remarkably held off a 111 average from Wessel Nijman to clinch a 5-4 win in his final group fixture, before continuing his sensational form into the knockout stages by demolishing Ryan Joyce 10-2 with an average of 106.5.
Semi-finalist in last year’s European Championship, the emerging Dutch star faces the longest match of his career to date as he bids to end Anderson’s dream of Grand Slam glory.
