The Second Round action draws to a close at the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton on Thursday as a clutch of big names aim to keep their title hopes alive.

Josh Rock, James Wade, Gary Anderson and Luke Humphries secured their place in the Quarter-Finals on Wednesday, leaving only one former Grand Slam champion left standing in the competition.

Three-time champion Michael van Gerwen is out to end his seven-year wait for glory in Wolverhampton and faces a Last 16 show-down with Damon Heta.

Van Gerwen is yet to taste success at the Aldersley Leisure Village, with his most recent Grand Slam title coming at the Wolves Civic in 2017.

The world number three, however, has reached at least the Quarter-Final stage in each of his last nine Grand Slam appearances and will look to assert his authority once again over the extended format.

Van Gerwen finished top of his group for the 12th time, defeating Fallon Sherrock, Rob Cross and Martijn Kleermaker in Group G, though he was made to work hard for his last two wins.

The Dutchman recovered from 3-1 down to edge past Cross in a deciding leg, before battling back from 4-2 down to deny Kleermaker by the same scoreline with an average of 90.2.

Heta, meanwhile, narrowly secured second spot in Group H courtesy of a dramatic 5-4 win over Beau Greaves in their straight shootout, surviving a match dart in the process.

The Australian number one is appearing in the knockout phase for the second time as he bids to equal his run to the Quarter-Finals on debut in 2020.

Meanwhile, reigning World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall takes on 2018 World Champion Rob Cross in a repeat of August’s New Zealand Masters final.

Cross hit back from 5-2 down to defeat Aspinall 8-7 and end his five-year wait for a World Series title and went on to complete a memorable double in Wollongong a week later.

Cross saw off Sherrock 5-2 in their decisive Group G fixture to maintain his perfect record of knockout qualification from seven appearances in the Grand Slam.

Aspinall was beaten 5-4 by Ricardo Pietreczko in his final group match, but four points proved enough for him to finish top of Group H by virtue of legs difference.

Runner-up here 12 months ago, ‘The Asp’ will be eyeing a marked improvement on his match average of 82.7 against the German as he vies to reach a third major ranking Quarter-Final of the year.

World number seven Danny Noppert takes on fellow Tour Card holder qualifier Stephen Bunting in what looks to be a closely-matched contest.

The pair met at the same stage of The Masters back in January, with Noppert narrowly prevailing 10-9.

The Dutch star is through to the knockout stages in Wolverhampton for the third time, having topped Group F with maximum points courtesy of wins over Haruki Muramatsu, Andrew Gilding and Brendan Dolan.

Bunting pulled off a terrific 5-3 win over European Champion Peter Wright in their decisive Group E tie to clinch second spot and a first knockout appearance since 2018.

The opening match of the night sees two players entering uncharted territory go head-to-head as Andrew Gilding meets Stowe Buntz.

UK Open champion Gilding thrashed Muramatsu 5-1 with a 99.8 average in his final group game to take second spot, while Buntz tore up the script in Group E to finish top despite being the rank outsider.

The American ace, making his TV debut, opened up with a 102.2 average in thrashing Wright 5-1, before beating Bunting 5-3 and narrowly losing out 5-4 to Dave Chisnall.

The CDC Continental Cup winner has already racked up £15,750 in prize money and will also be making his debut in next month’s World Championship.

The action gets under way from 7pm GMT, with Second Round matches to be contested over the best of 19 legs.
