Swiss Darts Trophy 2024 | Day Two Preview and Order of Play
The top 16 seeds begin their 2024 Swiss Darts Trophy campaigns in the Second Round in Basel on Saturday.
Day One saw a number of big names sent packing at St. Jakobshalle, including Peter Wright, Jonny Clayton and Dimitri van den Bergh.
The 16 highest ranked players from the PDC ProTour Order of Merit enter the fray on Day Two as the race to reach the World Grand Prix enters the final straight.
Luke Woodhouse currently holds the final ProTour qualification spot, but his early exit on Friday has opened the door for Andrew Gilding to potentially snatch a place in the double-start major.
The equation for ‘Goldfinger’ is simple – he must beat former World Champion Rob Cross in order to oust Woodhouse and move in to the provisional qualification places.
Jermaine Wattimena is Gilding’s nearest challenger, but he must reach the semi-finals this weekend and hope that Cross dispatches Gilding if he is to have any chance of qualification.
Wattimena takes on this year’s Dutch Darts Championship winner Josh Rock in the afternoon session.
Elsewhere, teenage sensation Luke Littler launches his latest quest for a third European Tour title of the season when he faces rank outsider Bruno Stöckli – one of two Host Nation qualifiers left standing in the competition.
Stöckli pulled off a 6-3 scalp of Krzysztof Ratajski in Round One but now faces a player who has reached the final in three of his six Euro Tour outings this year.
Roger Hertig is the other home hopeful in action, and he aims to follow up Friday’s win over Ryan Meikle with what would be a monumental upset against ninth seed Ryan Searle.
Gian van Veen aims to continue the form which saw him finish runner-up to Michael van Gerwen in a deciding leg in last week’s Hungarian Darts Trophy when he takes on Callan Rydz – who thrashed Brendan Dolan 6-1 in his opener.
Fourth seed Gerwyn Price resumes his pursuit of a first European Tour title of the season with a clash against ten-time major winner James Wade – who overcame Van den Bergh 6-3 in the opening round.
Ross Smith, twice a runner-up on the European Tour this year, faces a showdown with fellow maximum machine Mike De Decker, while eighth seed Damon Heta starts out against Latvian number one Madars Razma.
Daryl Gurney, semi-finalist in the German Darts Championship earlier this month, opens up against Czech ace Karel Sedlacek – who saw off Jim Williams in a high quality contest on Friday.
Fifth seed Danny Noppert faces a tough opener against ProTour event finalist Cameron Menzies – who dispatched Jonny Clayton in Round One and is assured of a place in the upcoming World Grand Prix.
International Open winner Martin Schindler aims to avoid a potential scalp at the hands of Sweden’s Anton Ostlund – who accounted for Dirk van Duijvenbode with a 95.5 average and four 180s on Friday.
Masters champion Stephen Bunting faces a showdown with 2023 World Champion Michael Smith – who defied a staggering 20 missed darts at doubles to edge out Ian White in a last-leg decider.
World number one Luke Humphries looks to put his indifferent midweek ProTour form behind him when he comes up against Richard Veenstra – who held off a late fightback from Peter Wright to seal an impressive 6-4 win in Round One.
Five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld averaged 102.5 in the stand-out performance of the opening round against Joe Cullen, and he now meets Ricardo Pietreczko – who withdrew from his match against Ross Smith in Budapest last weekend through injury, but made a brisk return on the ProTour in midweek and suffered back-to-back First Round exits.
Top seed Dave Chisnall, who claimed his second Players Championship title of the season on Wednesday, starts his bid for a third European Tour title of the campaign with a tie against former World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall.
Another unmissable contest sees former Premier League star Chris Dobey take on ProTour event finalist Wessel Nijman – who whitewashed Woodhouse in his opener and is out to follow up last week’s run to the quarter-finals in Hungary.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with Second Round ties to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
