The 2024 Swiss Darts Trophy begins in Basel on Friday as the qualifiers go head-to-head in the opening round.
The penultimate European Tour event of the season features 48 players competing for £175,000 in prize money at St. Jakobshalle from September 27-29.
The top 16 players in the PDC Order of Merit qualify automatically alongside the 16 highest ranked players on the PDC ProTour Order of Merit – who are seeded in the draw and enter in Saturday’s Second Round.
Following this weekend’s event, the 32-player field for the Boylesports World Grand Prix will be confirmed.
The afternoon session includes a crucial showdown between Luke Woodhouse and in-form Dutch ace Wessel Nijman.
Woodhouse currently occupies the 16th and final ProTour Order of Merit qualification spot for the World Grand Prix and would take a huge step towards confirming his place in the double-start major by overcoming Nijman.
Nijman has reached the final of a ProTour event this year as well as the quarter-finals of last week’s Hungarian Darts Trophy and must claim the title this weekend if he is to secure a debut in the Grand Prix.
Andrew Gilding leads the chasing pack in the race for Leicester but must reach at least the Third Round this weekend and hope for Nijman to do him a favour against Woodhouse.
Gilding starts out against Hungary’s Nándor Prés – who came through the East European qualifier to secure a place in this event.
Dirk van Duijvenbode requires a run to at least the quarter-finals in his quest for the World Grand Prix, and the Dutch opens up against Sweden’s Anton Ostlund in the evening session.
Jermaine Wattimena, who must reach at least the semi-finals in order to have any chance of making the Grand Prix, faces Ritchie Edhouse – who has already secured his debut in the prestigious double-in, double-out event.
Former European Tour event winner Krzysztof Ratajski takes on Bruno Stöckli – one of four Host Nation qualifiers in the field, as Latvia’s Madars Razma faces Swiss hopeful Alex Fehlmann.
Former World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall hosts Marcel Walpen in the evening session, while Ryan Meikle meets Swiss debutant Roger Hertig.
Jim Williams, who received a late call-up via the Reserve List following the withdrawal of Michael van Gerwen, opens up against Czech star Karel Sedlacek.
Mike De Decker, winner of a Players Championship event this year, faces Graham Hall, while Callan Rydz looks to kick on from Tuesday’s run to the quarter-finals of Players Championship 22 when he plays former World Grand Prix finalist Brendan Dolan.
The evening session features a box office clash between five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld and former Premier League finalist Joe Cullen – who is vying to clinch a place in the World Grand Prix.
European Champion Peter Wright, winner of a recent Euro Tour event, looks to continue his impressive recent resurgence when he faces former Lakeside semi-finalist Richard Veenstra.
UK Open champion Dimitri Van den Bergh looks to put his poor run of form behind him when he comes up against ten-time major winner James Wade – semi-finalist on the ProTour on Tuesday.
Former World Champion Michael Smith faces his former practice partner Ian White – who is making only his second Euro Tour appearance of the year after replacing Ryan Joyce via the Reserve List.
Cameron Menzies, runner-up in a Players Championship event last month, faces a tough opener against multiple major winner Jonny Clayton – who reached back-to-back quarter-finals on the ProTour in midweek.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with First Round ties to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
