Martin Lukeman pulled off an emphatic 6-1 rout of Michael van Gerwen in the Second Round of the 2022 European Darts Grand Prix in Stuttgart on Saturday.
Lukeman, runner-up in last month’s German Darts Grand Prix, continued his love affair with the European Tour by claiming the scalp of the world number three.
Van Gerwen had won three of the opening six European Tour events of the year, but was punished for 13 missed doubles and an average of just 89.7 as Lukeman claimed a memorable success at the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle.
“I’m just beating whoever is in front of me, it’s more ranking points!” said Lukeman. “I just need to win one [a Euro Tour title] now, as long as I don’t play Luke Humphries I’ll be alright!”
Lukeman, who averaged 96.2 and landed three 180s, will now face Martin Schindler in Sunday afternoon’s Third Round, with the German ace having defeated Latvia’s Madars Razma 6-2 to delight his home crowd.
Luke Humphries, who picked up his second Euro Tour title of 2022 in Prague last weekend, edged out Ryan Meikle in a last-leg decider to commence his latest quest for silverware.
The former World Youth Champion will begin Sunday’s Last 16 against Joe Murnan – who recovered from 4-2 down to defeat Dimitri van den Bergh in a decider.
Premier League leader Jonny Clayton hit back from 2-0 down against Adrian Lewis to move into the final day of action with a 6-3 success.
Clayton’s third round opponent will be World Champion Peter Wright after the world number one came reeled off five consecutive legs from 2-1 down to see off Sweden’s Johan Engstrom.
Danny Noppert defied a 103 average from Michael Smith to progress with a 6-4 win from a high-quality contest in a repeat of the UK Open final, averaging 102 in reply and sealing victory with a 124 checkout.
Noppert’s will now meet Nathan Rafferty on Sundat after the emerging Northern Irish star averaged 101.7 and took out 138 during a superb 6-3 defeat of Dirk van Duijvenbode.
Masters champion Joe Cullen was unable to repeat the form of Thursday’s Premier League triumph at The O2 in London as he went down 6-3 to in-form Rowby-John Rodriguez.
Rodriguez now faces Daryl Gurney after the former World Grand Prix winner came from 4-3 down to defeat Eddie Lovely 6-4 in a gruelling battle, sealing victory with a 120 checkout.
Ryan Searle finished six doubles from ten attempts in his 6-2 win over Adam Gawlas, taking out 143 and 114 in the process, and now plays Damon Heta after the Australian edged out Mickey Mansell in the deciding leg of a high-quality affair.
Krzysztof Ratajski produced a flawless display of finishing with six doubles from as many attempts in defeating Kim Huybrechts 6-2.
He now plays reigning European Champion Rob Cross, who was a 6-5 winner against Jelle Klaasen as a 14-darter snatched victory in their deciding leg.
