Van Gerwen, runner-up in Thursday’s Premier League Night 15 in Leeds, roared back to winning ways on Saturday at the expense of Wessel Nijman, averaging 107.8 in an emphatic 6-2 success.
Luke Humphries, who defeated Van Gerwen in the final on Thursday to claim a memorable triumph at the First Direct Arena, aims to extend his winning run when he faces former European Champion Ross Smith.
Humphries is bidding to go one better than his runner-up spot here last year and opened up with a 6-1 thrashing of Sebastian Bialecki, while Smith began his bid to reach a third consecutive Euro Tour semi-final with a 6-4 win over Luke Woodhouse, averaging 99.6.
Former World Champions collide in another tasty tussle as Rob Cross takes on Stephen Bunting.
Premier League star Cross averaged 102.6 in a 6-2 rout of Maik Kuivenhoven on Saturday, while Bunting overcame reigning WDF World Champion Andy Baetens 6-3.
Former UK Open champion Danny Noppert, who edged out Raymond van Barneveld in a decider, aims to end the fine run of Host Nation qualifier Franz Roetzsch – who dumped out seventh seed Josh Rock in Round Two.
Former European Tour event winner Damon Heta – who averaged 104.5 in defeating Gian van Veen on Saturday – comes up against power-scoring Belgian Mike De Decker – who has already seen off Martin Schindler and Krzysztof Ratajski.
In-form Ritchie Edhouse marks his fourth consecutive European Tour Last 16 appearance with a tie against 2023 German Championship winner Ricardo Pietreczko.
Edhouse has already dispatched major champions Nathan Aspinall and Jonny Clayton, while Pietreczko whitewashed German compatriot Moritz Hilger in his opener.
Former Euro Tour event winner Daryl Gurney faces a showdown with ninth seed Ryan Searle – who edged out Jermaine Wattimena in a deciding leg on Saturday.
Three-time Euro Tour event winner Joe Cullen looks to overcome methodical Latvian Madars Razma – who dethroned reigning champion Dave Chisnall on Saturday having also dumped out Chris Dobey in another deciding leg.
