Raymond van Barneveld coasts past Jonny Clayton at the International Darts Open
Raymond van Barneveld cruised into the Third Round of the 2025 International Darts Open following a 6-2 victory over Jonny Clayton in Riesa on Saturday, as four seeds bowed out.
Van Barneveld, who averaged 103.4 in his opening salvo on Friday, continued his impressive form by completing a dominant win over Clayton with a 97.5 average, 16 points higher than the out of sorts Welshman.
The five-time World Champion will now face Karel Sedlacek in Sunday’s Last 16 after the Czech star dumped out Danny Noppert 6-4 earlier in the day.
Gerwyn Price began his bid for a record-extending fifth International Open title with a 6-4 victory over Mike De Decker in a high quality contest.
The Welshman defied a 100.6 average from the World Grand Prix champion as he progressed with a 98.6 average, four 180s and a 119 checkout.
“I love the German crowds, and I love playing in Riesa,” said Price. “When I get support like I do here, things happen for me, and hopefully I can become a five-time champion tomorrow!”
Price will now face Nathan Aspinall on Sunday, after the European Darts Trophy champion began his bid for back-to-back European Tour titles with a 6-1 demolition of a struggling Joe Cullen – who averaged just 80.
“I feel good. I feel confident,” insisted Aspinall. “I’ve been saying all week that I’m going back-to-back and I’m really looking forward to playing Gezzy now.”
World number one Luke Humphries kicked off his campaign with a 6-1 demolition of Dirk van Duijvenbode, averaging 99.8 with five 180s and six from ten on the doubles.
Josh Rock produced the stand-out performance of the day as he overcame Gian van Veen 6-4 with a 107.6 average, avenging his defeat to the World Youth Champion in Gottingen a fortnight ago.
Stephen Bunting was another stand-out performer as he averaged 104.9 in a 6-4 success over Darius Labanauskas, following on from his Premier League exploits in Berlin on Thursday night.
Bunting also landed a 170 checkout en route to victory, and will now meet Cameron Menzies – who edged out James Wade in a deciding leg after surviving two match darts.
Menzies’ Scottish compatriot Peter Wright also won through a last-leg decider at the SACHSENarena, as the 2017 champion fired in a timely 14-darter to edge out current European Champion Ritchie Edhouse.
Meanwhile, Wessel Nijman claimed six of the last seven legs in his clash against Chris Dobey to set up a meeting with eighth seed Damon Heta – who ran out a comfortable 6-2 winner over Belgian veteran Mario Vandenbogaerde.
Ross Smith averaged 101 and landed five 180s to dispatch home favourite Ricardo Pietreczko 6-2, while sixth seed Dave Chisnall swept aside Luke Woodhouse by the same scoreline.
Former UK Open champion Andrew Gilding stormed to a 6-0 whitewash of Richard Veenstra, while Dimitri Van den Bergh ended his eight-match winless run on the European Tour with a 6-4 victory over Thibault Tricole to set up a clash with German number one Martin Schindler.
Defending champion Schindler received a bye through to the Third Round after his scheduled opponent Rob Cross withdrew from the tournament through illness on Friday.
