World Darts Championship 2024/25 Draw | Humphries to open title defence against Tricole or Comito

The draw for the 2024/25 World Darts Championship has been confirmed, with Luke Humphries to launch his title defence against either Thibault Tricole or Joe Comito at Alexandra Palace.
The sport’s show-piece event features 96 players competing for the Sid Waddell Trophy and £2.5 million prize fund from December 15 to January 3.
The 32nd staging of the PDC World Championship will feature the top 32 players from the PDC Order of Merit, the next highest 32 ranked players from the ProTour Order of Merit, plus a further 32 International Qualifiers.
Humphries, who secured his maiden world title courtesy of an historic 7-4 victory over Luke Littler in the final, will feature on the opening night of the tournament on Friday December 15 against either France’s Tricole or Australian qualifier Comito.
Littler, who has gone on to claim the Premier League and Grand Slam titles during a sensational debut season, will mark his return to Ally Pally with a Second Round tie against either Ryan Meikle or ‘Queen of the Palace’ Fallon Sherrock.
Three-time World Champion Michael van Gerwen, who last tasted success at Ally Pally in 2019, will await the winner of the First Round tie between James Hurrell and Canada’s Jim Long.
Two-time World Champion Gary Anderson will begin his latest campaign against either Jeffrey De Graaf or Rashad Sweeting – the first Bahamas qualifier ever to feature in the event.
Peter Wright, World Champion in 2020 and 2022, opens up with a tie against World Masters champion Wesley Plaisier or Japanese debutant Ryusei Azemoto.
Rob Cross, the 2018 World Champion, will meet either last year’s semi-finalist Scott Williams or German star Niko Springer, while 2023 World Champion Michael Smith takes on either Kevin Doets in a repeat of their Second Round showdown last year, or debutant Noa-Lynn van Leuven.
Gerwyn Price, the 2021 World Champion, faces a tricky opener against either Kim Huybrechts or Irish youngster Keane Barry, while five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld starts out against either Nick Kenny or American ace Stowe Buntz.
Masters champion Stephen Bunting, the number eight seed, will face either Alan Soutar or German debutant Kai Gotthardt, while sixth seed Dave Chisnall plays either Ricky Evans or Australia’s Gordon Mathers.
Former Premier League finalist Joe Cullen faces a potential showdown with Dutch sensation Wessel Nijman, should he overcome South Africa’s Cameron Carolissen in Round One.
Cameron Menzies and Leonard Gates will go head-to-head for the right to face two-time major winner Nathan Aspinall in the Last 64.
