The knockout phase of the 2024 Grand Slam of Darts commences on Wednesday with four tasty Last 16 ties from the top half of the draw.

The field has been halved following a pulsating three days of Group Stage action at the Aldersley Leisure Village, with a new name already guaranteed on the Eric Bristow trophy following the early exits of a host of former winners.

An open top section of the draw kicks off with a tie between eighth seed Danny Noppert and debutant Mickey Mansell.

Noppert stormed to top spot in Group B following three straight wins, progressing to the knockout phase for the third consecutive year.

The former UK Open champion is now bidding to surpass this stage of the competition for the first time in six appearances since 2016.

Mansell, meanwhile, was the surprise package in Group B, defeating James Wade with a 100.8 average before overcoming Rowby-John Rodriguez to secure his spot in the Last 16 of a ranked PDC major for the first time in a decade.

The Northern Irishman was beaten 5-1 by Luke Humphries in his final group fixture, but nevertheless secured second spot to send the defending champion crashing out.

Three-time Grand Slam finalist Wade looks to continue his superb recent record in this event when he faces the returning Cameron Menzies.

Wade has reached at least the semi-final stage in each of his last three appearances in Wolverhampton and is now back among the world’s top 16.

The ten-time major winner, who finished runner-up in 2010, 2016 and 2020, progressed as Group A winner with four points, thrashing Rodriguez 5-1 in their decisive fixture.

Menzies’ route to the Last 16 was a somewhat more dramatic one, with the Scot suffering a 5-1 defeat to Beau Greaves in his final group match before watching Martin Schindler squander four darts a doubles to secure the three legs he needed against Danny Noppert to qualify, thus sending Menzies through.

Menzies, winner of a ProTour event this season, finds himself in the Last 16 of a ranked PDC major for the first time but will be determined to improve on a dismal display of finishing against Greaves.

Elsewhere, Tour Card Holder qualifiers Ross Smith and Martin Lukeman will battle it out for a place in their first Grand Slam quarter-final.

Lukeman coasted to top spot in Group C with maximum points courtesy of wins over Peter Wright, Rob Cross and Leonard Gates for the combined loss of just six legs.

Former European Champion Smith recovered from a disappointing 5-1 defeat to Ritchie Edhouse by registering back-to-back wins over Dave Chisnall and Connor Scutt to finish runner-up in Group D.

Last year’s Grand Slam runner-up Cross comes up against reigning European Champion Edhouse in the final match of the evening.

Cross continued his perfect record in the group stage as he advanced for the eighth consecutive year, thrashing Wright 5-1 to clinch second spot in Group C.

The 2018 World Champion is now looking to make it four quarter-final appearances in five televised ranking events this season, but faces one of the most in-form and resurgent competitors on the circuit this year.

Edhouse continues to ride the crest of wave after securing a fairy-tale first major title at the European Championship last month and dropped just five legs in his three wins en route to topping Group D.

Edhouse averaged 104 and 105 in his first and third group matches respectively and has met Cross twice on the European Tour this season, with players claiming one win apiece.

The action gets under way from 7pm GMT, with Second Round matches to be contested over the best of 19 legs.
