The Group Stage action continues at the Grand Slam of Darts on Sunday with a crucial second set of fixtures in Wolverhampton.

The opening day of the £650,000 ranked major saw a number of big names slip to defeat over the short format, making their second group game effectively make or break.

Among those was defending champion Luke Humphries – who was stunned 5-3 by Rowby-John Rodriguez, and the world number one now faces three-time finalist James Wade in a crunch clash in Group A.

Wade, meanwhile, suffered a shock 5-3 defeat at the hands of debutant Mickey Mansell despite averaging 103 to the Northern Irishman’s 100.8.

Defeat for Humphries or Wade would see them all but eliminated from the tournament, with World Cup of Darts finalist Rodriguez and Tour Card Holder qualifier Mansell facing off earlier in the evening.

The evening session also features a stand-out fixture between three-time champion Michael van Gerwen and two-time finalist Gary Anderson in Group G.

Van Gerwen, who last claimed this title in 2017, coasted to a whitewash win over debutant Noa-Lynn van Leuven on Saturday and is bidding to progress to the knock-out stages for the 14th consecutive year.

Anderson opened up with a sensational showing against Ryan Joyce, thrashing the World Grand Prix semi-finalist 5-1 with a 113.2 average to put down an immediate marker.

The Flying Scotsman notably defeated MVG 10-4 in last month’s European Championship and will be keen to ensure a repeat outcome.

Joyce and Van Leuven face off in a must-win contest for both players, with their legs difference having taken a significant hit on Saturday.

Premier League champion Luke Littler aims to pick up from where he left off on Day One when he faces UK Open champion Dimitri van den Bergh.

Littler marked an emphatic debut by whitewashing Keane Barry 5-0 with a 112 average, silencing the critics after three consecutive First Round defeats in ranked majors.

Van den Bergh, meanwhile, averaged just 86 in a 5-1 victory over Lourence Ilagan, but sealed the points in style with a clinical 164 checkout.

Former UK Open semi-finalist Barry and Filipino star Ilagan face off in the opening match of the evening as they vie for a crucial two points to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Group E sees World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker up against former Champions League of Darts winner Mensur Suljovic.

De Decker slipped to a 5-2 defeat to a rampant Jermaine Wattimena on Saturday night and will be determined to bounce back when he faces Austria’s all-time great – who averaged 98.6 and landed three 180s in a 5-2 defeat to Michael Smith.

Smith, the 2022 Grand Slam champion, is looking to atone for last year’s group stage exit and could effectively secure his place in the Last 16 if he can overcome European Championship finalist Wattimena – who averaged 104.3 in a terrific opening salvo.

The afternoon session kicks off with a clash between eighth seed Danny Noppert and Scottish star Cameron Menzies in Group B.

Noppert is bidding to reach the knockout phase for the third consecutive year and started by overcoming Beau Greaves 5-2, while Menzies marked his return to the event for the first time since 2017 with an impressive victory over Martin Schindler by the same scoreline.

Two-time European Tour event winner Schindler faces two-time Women’s World Champion Greaves in a potentially pivotal tie in terms of their knockout aspirations.

Three-time Grand Slam finalist Peter Wright aims to recover from a brutal 5-0 whitewash on Saturday when he comes up against CDC Continental Cup winner Leonard Gates.

Wright averaged just 84.7 in defeat to debutant Martin Lukeman, while Gates went down 5-2 at the hands of 2018 World Champion Rob Cross.

Cross, last year’s beaten finalist, takes on in-form qualifier Lukeman for the chance to effectively rubber-stamp a place in the Last 16.

Group H, referred to by many as this year’s ‘Group of Death’, resumes with a tie between Dutch Championship winner Josh Rock and Dutch sensation Wessel Nijman.

Rock, who landed a nine-darter here two years ago, was afford only two legs by Gian van Veen on Saturday despite averaging 105.8, while Nijman was narrowly beaten in a deciding leg despite a 106.5 average.

Masters champion Stephen Bunting, who averaged 103 in his win over Nijman, looks to cap off a memorable week which saw him welcome the birth of his second child, when he faces World Youth finalist Van Veen – who averaged 110.4 in a sensational opening display.

Group D sees 2014 finalist Dave Chisnall looking to bounce back from a crushing whitewash defeat on Saturday when he faces former European Champion Ross Smith.

Chisnall’s concerning TV form continued as he averaged 93 in a 5-0 defeat, and the St Helens star could be staring down the barrel of a third straight group stage exit if he fails to overcome ‘Smudger’ – who averaged just 83 in a 5-1 humbling.

Reigning European Champion Ritchie Edhouse enjoyed a dream return to this event by averaging 104 in that win over Smith, and ‘Madhouse’ now meets Challenge Tour winner Connor Scutt – who averaged 104.4 in a dream debut display.

The action gets under way from 1pm GMT, with Group Stage matches to be contested over the best of nine legs.
