The 2024 Grand Slam of Darts gets under way in Wolverhampton on Saturday with the opening group matches held across two sessions.

An action-packed opening day at the Aldersley Leisure Village features 16 quick-fire group fixtures, with a host of star names looking to put points on the board at the first time of asking.

The afternoon session plays host to matches from Groups B, C, D and H, kicking off with a show-down between reigning Masters champion Stephen Bunting and Dutch debutant Wessel Nijman.

Bunting, who became a father for the second time earlier this week, has reached six Players Championship finals this season and enjoyed a terrific run to the semi-finals of this event 12 months ago.

Nijman, meanwhile, claimed his first senior PDC title at Players Championship 24 last month with victory over Bunting in the final and qualified after topping the Development Tour Order of Merit.

Group H also features a tie between Josh Rock, a winner of three PDC ranking titles in 2024, and back-to-back World Youth Championship finalist Gian van Veen.

Rock landed a nine-darter on his Grand Slam debut in 2022 before reaching the quarter-finals last time out, while Van Veen is looking to improve on last year’s disappointing display which saw him bow out after three straight defeats.

Dave Chisnall, runner-up at the Wolves Civic a decade ago, begins his 12th Grand Slam campaign with a tie against debutant Connor Scutt in Group D.

Chisnall has claimed two European Tour titles this season but has flattered to deceive in TV majors, suffering a string of early exits, while Scutt qualified courtesy of finishing top of this year’s Challenge Tour Order of Merit – regaining a Tour Card in the process.

Elsewhere in Group, newly-crowned European Champion Ritchie Edhouse comes up against 2022 European Champion Ross Smith – who has dropped to 22nd in the Order of Merit following a First Round exit in Dortmund.

Group B begins with a fascinating fixture between world number 12 Danny Noppert and back-to-back Women’s World Champion Beau Greaves.

Noppert enjoyed a fine run to the semi-finals of last month’s European Championship and came through the Tour Card Holder qualifier to secure a sixth Grand Slam appearance.

Greaves, 20, successfully retained her Women’s World Matchplay title in July to secure a return to this event and was runaway leader of the Women’s Series Order of Merit.

Martin Schindler, twice a European Tour event winner in a landmark 2024 for the German, aims to progress from the Group Stage for the first time in five attempts and faces in-form Cameron Menzies in the other Group B clash.

Menzies, winner of a maiden PDC ProTour event less than a fortnight ago, came through the Tour Card Holder qualifier to book his place in this prestigious event for the first time since 2017.

Rob Cross, last year’s Grand Slam runner-up, takes on American ace Leonard Gates in the opening fixture in Group C.

Cross is making his eighth consecutive Grand Slam appearance and is the number four seed after claiming a European Tour title and the US Masters title in 2024.

Gates won the CDC Continental Cup to secure a second Grand Slam appearance and has flourished since the inception of the World Seniors Tour, winning three televised tournaments last year.

Three-time Grand Slam finalist Peter Wright, an ever-present in this event since 2013, starts out against debutant qualifier Martin Lukeman.

The evening session sees reigning champion Luke Humphries launch the defence of his title in Group A against Rowby-John Rodriguez.

Humphries stormed to his second major title here last year and has since gone on to win the Players Championship Finals, World Championship and World Matchplay, while also finishing runner-up in the Premier League, UK Open and World Grand Prix.

The world number one has the opportunity to become the first player to surpass the £2 million barrier in the Order of Merit and will be keen to hit the ground running against World Cup of Darts finalist Rodriguez – returning to this event for the first time since 2021.

Group A also sees three-time Grand Slam runner-up James Wade take on debutant Mickey Mansell – who also came through the Tour Card Holder qualifier last Friday, defeating Gerwyn Price in the final round.

Premier League champion Luke Littler heads a high quality Group F and starts out with a tie against former UK Open semi-finalist Keane Barry.

Littler, a two-time European Tour event winner and three-time Players Championship winner in 2024, is looking to improve on his record in ranked majors this year, having suffered three straight First Round exits at the World Matchplay, World Grand Prix and European Championship.

Meanwhile, reigning UK Open champion Dimitri Van den Bergh marks his first Grand Slam appearance since 2020 with a clash against PDC Asian Championship winner Lourence Ilagan.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Michael van Gerwen begins his Group G campaign against debutant Noa-Lynn van Leuven – who qualified as runner-up in this year’s Women’s Series Order of Merit.

Van Gerwen claimed a hat-trick of Grand Slam titles from 2015-2017 but has not been beyond the semi-finals since and suffered his earliest exit (Last 16) for a decade in last most recent appearance.

Group G also sees two-time World Champion Gary Anderson take on World Grand Prix semi-finalist Ryan Joyce.

Anderson finished runner-up in both the 2011 and 2018 Grand Slam and secured his return by winning the European Darts Grand Prix earlier this year, in addition to two Players Championship titles.

A formidable Group E commences with a clash between 2022 Grand Slam champion Michael Smith and World Cup of Darts finalist Mensur Suljovic – making his first appearance in a ranked major since the UK Open back in March.

Smith, who partnered Humphries to claim World Cup of Darts glory for England this summer, will be out to atone for last year’s Group Stage exit despite registering four points.

The final match of the evening sees reigning World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker take on European Championship runner-up Jermaine Wattimena.

The action gets under way from 1pm GMT, with Group Stage matches to be contested over the best of nine legs.
