World Seniors Darts Masters 2024 | Day One Preview and Order of Play
The 2024 World Seniors Masters gets under way in Sunderland on Friday, with six former World Champions among those in action.
The third staging of the BetGoodwin World Seniors Masters sees 16 players competing for glory at the Nissan Sports & Leisure Complex from November 8-9.
It is the fourth and final major televised WSDT event of the year, following on from the World Seniors Championship, Champion of Champions and World Seniors Matchplay.
The afternoon session on Day One includes a show-down between three-time BDO World Champion Glen Durrant and former BDO Gold Cup winner Paul Hogan.
The fixture evokes memories of their epic contest at Lakeside back in 2017, which Durrant sensationally battled back from three sets and two legs down to prevail 4-3 in the Second Round and eventually go on to claim his first world title.
Durrant, the 2020 Premier League champion, is making his first big stage appearance since February, when he was edged out in a fifth set by Mark Dudbridge in the World Seniors Championship.
Hogan was a quarter-finalist at the Circus Tavern in February and has also picked up an LP Metal Detecting Series title on the World Seniors circuit in 2024.
Two-time World Seniors champion Robert Thornton comes up against ten-time Women’s World Champion Trina Gulliver MBE.
Thornton, who also claimed the World Seniors Matchplay title in 2022, reached the semi-finals of that same tournament in York last month, while Gulliver was beaten 8-4 by Richie Howson in Round One despite an impressive showing.
Four-time Women’s World Champion Lisa Ashton opens up with a tie against 1996 Lakeside quarter-finalist Matt Clark.
Ashton enjoyed a superb run to the semi-finals of this year’s World Seniors Championship and has also secured two PDC Women’s Series titles, finishing fifth on the Order of Merit.
Clark is looking to make it third time lucky in his quest for a first televised win of the year, having lost out to Scott Mitchell at the Circus Tavern and Martin Adams in York.
Seventh seed Richard Eirig-Rowlands, semi-finalist in this year’s Champion of Champions, debutant Andrew Kateley – who came through the qualifying event to secure a dream first appearance on a televised stage.
The evening session features a stand-out tie between reigning World Seniors champion John Henderson and 2015 BDO World Champion Scott Mitchell.
Henderson has enjoyed a dominant year on the World Seniors circuit, adding the World Seniors Matchplay title to his Circus Tavern triumph, as well as a Target Open Series victory.
The popular Scotsman finished 11th on the 2024 PDC Challenge Tour Order of Merit and has featured in a number of Players Championship events this year, competing with the sport’s elite.
Mitchell, who dropped off the PDC circuit in 2023, reached two Challenge Tour quarter-finals this season and will be out to make his mark on the Seniors stage after back-to-back Last 16 exits in the World Seniors Championship.
Three-time BDO World Champion Martin Adams faces a tough opener against a resurgent Chris Mason in a repeat of their iconic quarter-final at Lakeside back in 1999.
Adams led by four sets to one on that occasion but squandered a staggering nine match darts as Mason completed an extraordinary comeback to prevail 5-4.
Adams, runner-up in the inaugural World Seniors Championship, was beaten by Thornton in the quarter-finals of the recent World Seniors Matchplay and is the oldest player in the field at 68.
Mason was a quarter-finalist in this year’s World Seniors Championship and was beaten 8-4 by an in-form Neil Duff in York last month, but will be eyeing a deep run in the North East.
Reigning Champion of Champions Richie Howson starts out with a tie against three-time BDO world finalist Tony O’Shea.
Second seed Howson will be out to go one better than his runner-up spot in this event last year and continued his consistent form in the WSDT majors by reaching the semi-finals of the Matchplay in October.
O’Shea, who was forced to withdraw from this year’s World Seniors Championship through injury, made his return at the Matchplay – where he went down 8-5 to eventual champion Henderson despite a spirited display.
Another tasty tie sees former WDF World Champion Duff take on 2016 BDO World Trophy winner Darryl Fitton.
Duff, the number six seed, remains in pursuit of his first televised World Seniors silverware and has registered a number of high averages, including a 96 against Mason at the York Barbican.
Fitton, 62, reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 World Seniors Championship, defeating former World Champions Les Wallace and John Part along the way, and returns to the big stage for the first time since February.
The action gets under way from 1pm, with First Round matches to be contested over the best of seven sets. All sets are best of three legs.
