The First Round action continues at the Boylesports World Grand Prix in Leicester on Tuesday with a host of big names colliding.

Day One of the sport’s annual double-start major saw the likes of Luke Littler and Raymond van Barneveld bow out in last-set deciders, while defending champion Luke Humphries pulled off a remarkable comeback from a set and two legs down to stun Stephen Bunting.

Day Two features eight more quick-fire ties, including a showdown between former World Champions Michael Smith and Gary Anderson.

The pair face off for the second successive major ranking tournament, with Anderson looking to avenge his 10-5 defeat to Bully Boy at the World Matchplay in Blackpool.

Smith went on to reach the semi-finals of the World Matchplay and has picked up the World Cup of Darts title this year, as well as finishing runner-up in the World Series Finals.

Anderson, World Grand Prix finalist in 2016, has enjoyed a sensational season away from the major stages, winning the European Darts Grand Prix alongside two Players Championships.

Michael van Gerwen begins his bid for a seventh World Grand Prix crown with a clash against 2017 champion Daryl Gurney.

Van Gerwen has reached the final in seven of his 13 previous Grand Prix appearances, and it was his triumph against Mervyn King in 2012 which proved the catalyst for his remarkable spell of dominance in the proceeding decade.

The three-time World Champion claimed his first ranking title of the year at Players Championship 21 in September, adding to his Dutch Masters triumph on the World Series in January.

Gurney also landed his first major title in Dublin seven years ago and has been an ever-present in the event since 2014, but has lost in the opening round in four of the last five stagings.

James Wade, the 2010 champion, starts out with a tie against reigning European Champion Peter Wright.

Wade enjoyed a superb run to the semi-finals of the World Matchplay this summer and has climbed back to the periphery of the world’s top 16 in what is his 20th year as a PDC professional.

However, this tournament has not proved a happy hunting ground for ‘The Machine’ over the past decade, with seven of his last nine appearances resulting in First Round exits, and the remaining two resulting in Second Round defeats.

Wright was runner-up in Dublin in 2018 and is defending semi-final ranking money from two years ago as he aims to avoid a further slip down the Order of Merit.

The two-time World Champion returned to the winner’s circle at the German Darts Championship last month and was a semi-finalist in this year’s World Cup of Darts.

The opening match of the night sees two-time World Grand Prix finalist Dave Chisnall take on in-form debutant Cameron Menzies.

Chisnall, who finished runner-up in 2013 and 2019, has enjoyed another terrific campaign away from the TV stage in 2024, claiming two European Tour titles and two Players Championships to climb to fifth in the Order of Merit.

Menzies is enjoying his best season as a professional and is now inside the world’s top 40 after finishing runner-up in a Players Championship event and reaching a further two semi-finals.

Gerwyn Price looks to continue his consistent record in this competition when he comes up against former UK Open champion Danny Noppert.

Price has reached the final in three of his last four World Grand Prix appearances, winning the title behind closed doors in 2020, and was denied glory again by Luke Humphries 12 months ago.

The Welshman has struggled for results this season despite a number of high averages, finishing seventh in the Premier League and losing out in the Second Round of the World Matchplay, as well as five consecutive opening round defeats on the European Tour.

Noppert, meanwhile, reached the semi-finals of this event in 2021 and has added a fifth Players Championship title to his CV this term.

Two former Masters champions go head-to-head in the final match of the night as Chris Dobey faces Joe Cullen.

Dobey has reached back-to-back quarter-finals at the World Grand Prix and has picked up a trio of ProTour titles this year, while Cullen enjoyed a fine run to the semi-finals here 12 months ago and was runner-up in this year’s Austrian Darts Open.

Reigning UK Open champion Dimitri van den Bergh takes on Luke Woodhouse – twice a semi-finalist on the ProTour this year.

Australian number one Damon Heta, twice a ProTour event winner in 2024 faces a tricky opener against Belgian ace Mike De Decker – who claimed the Players Championship 16 title back in August.

The action gets under way from 6pm BST, with First Round matches to be contested over the best of three sets.
