BetGoodwin World Seniors Matchplay 2024 | Day One Preview and Order of Play
The BetGoodwin World Seniors Matchplay gets under way in York on Friday as the big names do battle at the Barbican.
The third staging of the competition sees 16 players competing for glory from October 4-5 in the third major televised WSDT event of the year, following on from the World Seniors Championship and the Champion of Champions.
Day One sees the eight First Round ties held across two sessions, kicking off in the afternoon with a clash between top seed Richie Howson and ten-time Women’s World Champion Trina Gulliver.
Having finished runner-up in the 2023 World Seniors Championship and 2023 World Seniors Masters, Howson finally got his hands on televised silverware at the Champion of Champions in March, marking the biggest moment of his career to date.
Gulliver has been an ever-present in the World Seniors majors since 2022 and notably took a set off eventual champion John Henderson in this year’s World Seniors Championship.
Three-time BDO World Champion Martin Adams then comes up against WSDT Order of Merit Qualifier Matt Clark.
Adams, 68, was runner-up in the inaugural World Seniors Championship and is the oldest player in this event, but remains highly competitive in the Modus Super Series and World Seniors tour.
Clark was a quarter-finalist in the 1996 BDO World Championship and made his debut in this year’s World Seniors Championship at the Circus Tavern, going down 3-1 in sets to Scott Mitchell.
Former Players Champion Kevin Painter kicks off with a tie against former World Seniors Master David Cameron.
Painter has twice reached the semi-finals of the World Seniors Championship and is making his first appearance on a televised stage since announcing he had recently recovered from a bout of dartitis.
Canadian ace Cameron, meanwhile, sensationally claimed the World Seniors Masters title at Lakeside in 2022 and qualified for the most recent PDC World Championship, but is yet to back up that success, with First Round defeats at Ally Pally and the Circus Tavern.
Leonard Gates launches the defence of his title with a showdown against debutant James Richardson in the final match of the afternoon.
Gates landed his third televised World Seniors title in York last year to complete the hat-trick after the Champion of Champions and World Seniors Masters, but the American has suffered First Round exits in both majors so far this year.
Richardson, who reached the Last 16 of the PDC World Championship in 2018 and is a former PDC Challenge Tour winner, came through the qualifiers to book his place in this event and will be keen to hit the ground running.
The opening match of the evening session sees two-time World Seniors champion Robert Thornton take on three-time World Champion John Part.
Thornton is bidding to bounce back from his First Round defeat here 12 months ago and saw his unbeaten run at the Circus Tavern ended by Andy Hamilton in Round Two back in February.
Part was beaten 9-7 by his nemesis Phil Taylor in last year’s opening round in York but has enjoyed some impressive recent results on the CDC Tour, defeating the likes of Jim Long and Jeff Springer with 90+ averages.
Former WDF World Champion Neil Duff faces a tough opener against World Seniors Championship quarter-finalist Chris Mason.
Duff is chasing down his first World Seniors major title having claimed a WSDT Open Series title last year, and the Ballyclare thrower enjoyed a strong run to the semi-finals in York last time out.
Mason, meanwhile, rolled back the years to defeat Darryl Fitton and Manfred Bilderl at the Circus Tavern before losing out to Lisa Ashton in the Last Eight, and the 54-year-old will be eyeing an upset on his debut in York.
Reigning World Seniors champion John Henderson aims to continue the form which led him to glory in February when he faces three-time BDO world finalist Tony O’Shea.
Henderson, who featured as a Challenge Tour top-up on the PDC ProTour in midweek, starts out as favourite to claim this title and remains a formidable competitor.
O’Shea received a late call-up to the event following the withdrawal of Phil Taylor, and ‘Silverback’ will be eyeing redemption after having to withdraw himself from the World Seniors Championship due to a hand injury.
The final match of the evening sees four-time Women’s World Champion Lisa Ashton face World Seniors Championship quarter-finalist Paul Hogan.
Ashton enjoyed a sensational run to the semi-finals in Purfleet earlier this year, defeating Mike Huntley, Scott Mitchell and Mason, before being narrowly denied by Colin McGarry in a fifth set decider.
Hogan defeated Mitchell and Phil Taylor en route to the semis here last year and has already picked up a WSDT LP Metal Detecting Series title in 2024.
The action gets under way from 1pm BST, with First Round matches to be contested over the best of 15 legs.
