The BetGoodwin World Seniors Matchplay continues on Saturday as the final eight face off for the title in York.
Day One of the season’s third WSDT major witness darting drama aplenty, including upsets, high checkouts and a tie break.
The tournament culminates on Saturday with the quarter-final ties in the afternoon session, before the semi-finals and final take place in the evening.
The opening quarter-final sees reigning World Seniors Champion of Champions Richie Howson take on former WDF World Champion Neil Duff.
Having finished runner-up in the 2023 World Seniors Championship and 2023 World Seniors Masters, Howson finally got his hands on televised silverware in Blackpool in March, marking the biggest moment of his career to date.
Howson got his campaign at the York Barbican under way with an 8-4 win over ten-time Women’s World Champion Trina Gulliver in a match which featured five ton-plus finishes.
Duff was Friday’s stand-out performer, averaging 96 as he reeled off five legs on the spin to defeat Chris Mason 8-4, and the Northern Irishman is in hit pursuit of his maiden televised Seniors title.
Reigning World Seniors champion John Henderson faces a tough assignment against 2022 World Seniors Master David Cameron.
Henderson, a former World Cup of Darts winner who competed on the PDC ProTour in midweek, will be eyeing a marked improvement on his opening display which saw him overcome Tony O’Shea 8-5 despite an average of 80.5.
Cameron, meanwhile, kept his composure against a struggling Kevin Painter on Friday to seal an 8-3 victory with a clinical 152 checkout.
The Canadian will be out to do the double over ‘Hendo’ after prevailing 8-4 when the pair met in the opening round here last year.
Reigning champion Leonard Gates resumes the defence of his title with a showdown against four-time Women’s World Champion Lisa Ashton.
Gates landed his third televised World Seniors title in York last year to complete the hat-trick after the Champion of Champions and World Seniors Masters, and the American bounced back from successive First Round exits in both majors so far this year by defeating debutant James Richardson in Round One.
Ashton enjoyed a sensational run to the semi-finals at the Circus Tavern earlier this year and continued her fine form on the Seniors stage by thrashing Paul Hogan 8-3 on Friday.
A repeat of the inaugural World Seniors Championship final sees Robert Thornton take on three-time BDO World Champion Martin Adams.
Thornton claimed the first of his back-to-back World Seniors Championship titles at the expense of Adams in 2022 and also defeated ‘Wolfie’ in the semi-finals en route to claiming this title later that year.
Both players will be out to improve on below-par opening displays, with Thornton needing a tie break to defeat three-time World Champion John Part 10-8, while Adams battled past Matt Clark 8-6 with an 80 average.
The action gets under way from 1pm BST, with quarter-finals to be contested over the best of 15 legs and semi-finals and final best of 17.
