International Darts Open 2024 | Day One Preview and Order of Play

The 2024 International Darts Open commences in Riesa on Friday as the qualifiers battle it out in Round One.

The third of 13 European Tour events this year features 48 players competing for £175,000 in prize money at the SACHSENarena from April 12-14.

The afternoon session on Friday includes a showdown between former Euro Tour event winner Mervyn King and fellow Tour Card holder qualifier William O’Connor – twice a Euro Tour finalist in recent years.

Luke Woodhouse looks to maintain the form which led him to the semi-finals of Players Championship 7 on Monday when he faces former Lakeside semi-finalist Michael Unterbuchner.

Andrew Gilding, the 2023 UK Open champion, faces a tough opener against in-form Richard Veenstra – twice a BDO World Championship semi-finalist.

Former Euro Tour event winner Daryl Gurney opens up against debutant Host Nation qualifier Patrick Klingelhoefer, while World Championship quarter-finalist Brendan Dolan meets another German hopeful in Kai Gotthardt.

Reigning UK Open champion Dimitri van den Bergh gets under way with a tie against Czech qualifier Alexander Mašek, as Ritchie Edhouse faces Jitse van der Wal in the opening match of the tournament.

Three-time major quarter-finalist Callan Rydz aims to put his poor run of form behind him when he takes on Lee Evans – who benefitted from Gary Anderson’s withdrawal to receive a place in the field via the reserve list.

The evening session sees Dutch stars Gian van Veen and Raymond van Barneveld face off for the second successive European Tour event.

Van Veen came out on top 6-5 when the pair met in the recent German Darts Grand Prix, landing five 180s en route to recording a first career win over his darting idol.

German number one Gabriel Clemens aims to delight a partisan home crowd by overcoming two-time World Champion Peter Wright.

Clemens famously dispatched Wright in the Third Round of the 2020/21 World Championship and will be determined to inflict another defeat on ‘Snakebite’ – who surrendered a 4-1 lead in an eventual 6-4 loss to Luke Humphries in the Premier League in Birmingham last night.

Former European Champion Simon Whitlock marks his first Euro Tour appearance of the year with a clash against in-form Cameron Menzies – who was beaten by Michael Smith in the recent German Darts Grand Prix.

Power-scoring Belgian Mike De Decker comes up against ten-time major winner James Wade in another stand-out tie, while former Grand Slam champion Jose De Sousa faces Norway’s Cor Dekker – who came through the Nordic & Baltic qualifier.

Former Masters champion Chris Dobey, who claimed the Players Championship 7 title in Leicester on Monday, takes on Irish left-hander Dylan Slevin.

World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall aims to bounce back from last night’s quarter-final defeat to Michael van Gerwen in the Premier League when he meets former Challenge Tour event winner Owen Bates in the final match of the evening.

Meanwhile, Martin Schindler looks to sustain the form which led him to the semi-finals of the recent German Darts Grand Prix when he plays German compatriot Jan Dueckers – making his Euro Tour debut.

The action gets under way from 12pm GMT, with First Round ties to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
