German Darts Open 2022 | Day One Preview and Order of Play
The 2022 German Darts Open commences in Jena on Friday as the qualifiers face off in Round One.
The 11th of 13 Euro Tour events this season features 44 players battling it out for £140,000 in prize money at the Sparkassen-Arena from September 9-11.
The top 16 players from the ProTour Order of Merit (as of June 28) are seeded and enter at the Second Round stage on Saturday, while 28 qualifiers battle it out for the right to join them.
One of the stand-out ties of the opening day sees five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld take on three-time European Tour event winner Ian White in the evening session.
Both players have significant ground to make up in the race to qualify for next month’s European Championship and will be determined to mount a strong run to bolster their hopes this weekend.
Daryl Gurney, the 2019 German Championship winner, opens up with a clash against emerging star Connor Scutt in another appetising contest.
Four-time Development Tour event winner Josh Rock, who reached the Quarter-Finals in Budapest last weekend, starts out against another four-time Development Tour winner in Geert Nentjes.
German number one Gabriel Clemens aims to delight his home crowd by overcoming in-form Martin Lukeman – runner-up in the German Darts Grand Prix earlier this year.
Associate Member qualifier Danny van Trijp, who hit a nine-darter in the recent Live League, takes on former World Cup winner John Henderson – who is battling to keep his Tour Card come the end of the season.
Scottish star Alan Soutar faces Lukas Wenig – one of two Host Nation qualifiers in the field, the other being Dragutin Horvat – who meets Canadian ace Jeff Smith in the afternoon session.
Two players who enjoyed runs to the Last 16 in Hungary a week ago go head-to-head as Jim Williams takes on Czech ace Karel Sedlacek.
Scott Williams, who achieved the rare feat earlier this year of picking up a ProTour title despite not holding a Tour Card, starts out against former World Youth Champion Bradley Brooks.
Rapid Dutch thrower Martijn Kleermaker kicks off the day’s proceedings against David Evans – a player desperate for a good run of results after a torrid first 18 months on the professional circuit.
UK Open semi-finalist Keane Barry faces a tough opener against Luke Woodhouse, while former Czech Open winner Jamie Hughes meets Swedish number one Daniel Larsson.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with First Round matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
