Phil Taylor dug deep to defeat Deta Hedman 8-4 on the opening night of the 2022 World Seniors Matchplay in Hull on Friday.

Taylor, the 16-time World Champion and 16-time World Matchplay winner, began his quest for a maiden Seniors crown with a battling win over the former Women’s world number one.

The pair went into the interval locked level at three legs apiece, but Taylor returned to win five of the next six and avoid a shock early exit at The Bonus Arena.

Hedman fired in a 158 checkout during the contest, but ‘The Power’ found his range in the second half of the tie to prevail, despite an average of just 75.

“It was hard work,” admitted Taylor. “Deta is a very steady player and I’ve known her since I first started my career, it was a difficult game.”

“I thought to myself ‘you’d better start pulling your socks up here otherwise you’ll be going home’.

“My preparation is not as good as it should be. My focus isn’t on darts, it’s on other things.

“It’s about entertaining the fans, and they’re not watching what they should be. It’s either do it, or next year pull the plug.”

Hedman had earlier defeated 10-time Women’s World Champion Trina Gulliver MBE 8-5 in the Preliminary Round to earn her first win on the new Seniors tour.

Elsewhere, Colin McGarry marked his World Seniors debut with a dominant 8-3 victory over 1983 World Champion Keith Deller.

The Northern Irish ace, appearing in a televised event for the first time since the 2013 PDC World Championship, produced finishes of 117, 118 and 121 on his way to an impressive victory with an average just shy of 90.

Former World finalist Kevin Painter made a perfect start to his title quest by whitewashing three-time World Champion John Lowe 8-0 to coast into the Quarter-Finals.

Lowe, 76, was punished for a clutch of missed doubles early in the contest as ‘The Artist’ ran out a comfortable winner with a 140 checkout proving the highlight.
