Luke Littler and Gerwyn Price go head-to-head in the final of the 2026 World Matchplay in Blackpool on Sunday.
A fitting climax to a memorable week at the Winter Gardens sees defending champion Littler face former champion Price for the record £225,000 top prize and the iconic Phil Taylor Trophy.
Luke Littler is bidding to become only the fourth player in the history of the World Matchplay to successfully retain the title and is also out to maintain his clean sweep of major titles this season, having won the World Championship, World Masters, UK Open, Premier League and World Cup of Darts.
The 19-year-old has won the last five major ranking titles, with his last defeat in a ranked major coming against James Wade in last October’s European Championship.
The world number one stormed past German debutant Niko Springer on opening night with a 109.5 average, before producing one of the best displays ever witnessed at the Empress Ballroom to defeat a gallant Nathan Aspinall 11-8.
Littler’s 113.68 average was the second highest in World Matchplay history and featured a roof-raising nine-darter in the opening leg of the contest – doubling his tally of perfect legs in this event following his semi-final heroics last year.
He then produced a devastating mid-match burst to dispose of Josh Rock 16-7 with a 109.5 average and a staggering 17 maximums, before demolishing Dirk van Duijvenbode 17-5 to maintain his astonishing unbeaten record in major semi-finals.
Littler’s 110.88 average against Van Duijvenbode mirrored that exactly of his tournament average – which remains on course to break Phil Taylor’s record of 106.31 set in 2010.
Standing between the teenage trailblazer and another slice of history is new Welsh number one Price – appearing in his second World Matchplay final after initially finishing runner-up to Michael van Gerwen in 2022.
Price famously landed a nine-darter here en route to the final four years ago and extended his run of having not lost in the opening round at the Winter Gardens since 2019 by scraping past Martin Schindler in a tie break.
The former World Champion then emphatically dispatched 2019 champion Rob Cross 11-5, before overcoming Ross Smith 16-12 in the quarter-finals with a 102.8 average and ten maximums.
Price then powered past Gian van Veen 17-10 to end his seven-match losing streak in major semi-finals and reach his first televised ranking final since the 2023 World Grand Prix.
He is now eyeing a first major ranking title since the 2021 Grand Slam of Darts for what would see him become the 15th different winner of this prestigious tournament.
However, ‘The Iceman’ has lost his last nine consecutive meetings with Littler, the most recent of which an agonising 10-9 defeat in the Premier League semi-finals at The O2 in May.
The final gets under way from 8pm BST and will be contested over the best of 35 legs. Should the score reach 17-17, a maximum of six extra legs will be played before sudden death.
