Premier League Darts 2023 | Night Ten Birmingham Preview and Order of Play
Premier League Darts visits Birmingham for Night Ten of the competition on Thursday as the battle for play-off places gathers pace.
Seven league nights remain before the top four in the league table will head to The O2 next month to compete for the sport’s most prestigious invitational title.
Whilst the top two look to have one foot in the play-offs, it remains all to play for amongst the chasing pack, with just six points separating third from seventh in the standings.
The roadshow reaches the Utilita Arena in Birmingham this week and kicks off with a Quarter-Final clash between league leader Michael van Gerwen and debutant Chris Dobey.
This will be the pair’s first meeting since Dobey inflicted Van Gerwen’s first-ever Premier League whitewash on a remarkable night in Nottingham three weeks ago.
That shock scoreline ended Van Gerwen’s run of ten consecutive Premier League wins, having claimed a hat-trick of weekly titles, and opened the door for Gerwyn Price to mount a challenge for top spot.
Since then, Van Gerwen has finished runner-up in Newcastle and bounced back from last week’s Quarter-Final exit by reaching the final of the International Darts Open in Riesa – where he was denied glory by his recent nemesis Gerwyn Price.
Dobey also defeated Van Gerwen in the final of the opening night in Belfast, before the Dutchman prevailed 6-3 in their next meeting in Dublin.
After five weeks without a win, Masters champion Dobey is now back in business after reaching the final in Nottingham, as well as registering two points on home soil in Newcastle, though last week’s Quarter-Final loss to Nathan Aspinall leaves him five points outside of the top four.
Man of the moment Price has narrowed the gap to just five points at the top of the pile and looks to continue his blistering run of form when he faces Dimitri van den Bergh.
The imperious Welshman has claimed back-to-back European Tour titles in Leverkusen and Riesa, as well as winning two of the last three Premier League nights.
Price has won both of his previous meetings with Van den Bergh in this year’s Premier League and a fourth weekly title of the campaign would see him all but assured of a play-off spot for the first time.
Van den Bergh makes the short trip from his home in the East Midlands looking to avoid a third consecutive Quarter-Final defeat and finally stop the rot against The Ice Man.
The former World Matchplay champion occupies seventh spot, six points adrift of the top four, and can ill-afford another slip-up if he is to avoid becoming cut adrift.
Meanwhile, Jonny Clayton launches his quest for back-to-back weekly titles with a clash against 2020 runner-up Nathan Aspinall.
Clayton, the 2021 Premier League champion, triumphed in Berlin to claim his first weekly title of the season, having finished top of last year’s table with four weekly titles to his name, including in Birmingham – where he averaged 111 in a 6-1 rout of James Wade in the final.
The five points in the German capital last week catapulted ‘The Ferret’ from seventh to fifth and within two points of Aspinall in the play-off places.
Aspinall has won seven of his nine Quarter-Final ties so far, although one of those two defeats came against Clayton on Night Four in Dublin.
Only once, however, has ‘The Asp’ made it beyond the Semi-Final stage to date – that coming in Cardiff on Night Two.
World number one Michael Smith looks to consolidate his top four spot and pile more misery on rock bottom Peter Wright.
Wright is seven points adrift at the foot of the table and 13 points off the play-offs, having registered just one win in ten matches played.
The two-time World Champion has failed to average above 93 in a Premier League fixture since Night Three in Glasgow and was whitewashed 6-0 by Van Gerwen in the Quarter-Finals of the International Darts Open last weekend.
Smith, who won Night Three in Glasgow, finished runner-up for the second time this season after losing 6-4 to Clayton in last week’s final.
The reigning World Champion has hit more 180s (55) than any other player so far and was a 6-5 winner over Wright when the pair met in Dublin back in February.
Night Ten of 2023 Premier League Darts gets under way in Birmingham from 7pm BST, with all matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
