Yet this is not an easy fixture for City. United won the corresponding match 2-0 last season, and City have won only one of the last four Premier League meetings between the clubs. Old Trafford could therefore provide Carrick with another opportunity to demonstrate that his side’s encouraging progress last season was more than a temporary bounce.
The tactical battle should be fascinating. United will need to press intelligently and exploit the space behind City’s advanced defensive structure, while Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo and Rashford can provide the pace and creativity to punish turnovers. City, meanwhile, will look to control possession and feed Haaland early.
City deserve to start as favourites, but the derby’s recent history suggests caution. United have enough attacking threat to make this uncomfortable, particularly on home soil. Expect an open, high-quality contest in which the first goal could prove decisive.
