Players Championship Finals 2024 | Day Two Preview and Order of Play

Moving day at the 2024 Players Championship Finals sees the Second and Third Round ties take place across two sessions at Butlins Minehead.

An extraordinary opening day of the season’s penultimate major saw 15 of the world’s top 32 ranked players crash out, including five former World Champions.

As has been the case in recent months, the field has again been blown wide open in various sections of the draw, presenting the chance for a rank outsider to challenge for the title.

However, a host of usual suspects remain in the running for the £120,000 title and will be looking to safely navigate their way into Sunday’s quarter-finals.

The afternoon’s Second Round ties on the Main Stage include defending champion Luke Humphries up against five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld.

Humphries bounced back from his shock Group Stage exit at the Grand Slam by safely seeing off Gabriel Clemens on Friday, while Van Barneveld overcame Dutch compatriot Chris Landman 6-2 to record his first win in this event since 2021.

Newly-crowned Grand Slam champion Luke Littler looks to continue his mesmerising vein of form when he faces reigning European Champion Ritchie Edhouse.

Littler, who romped to his first major ranking title in Wolverhampton last weekend, averaged 112.7 in a 6-0 whitewash of Rob Cross in Round One, while Edhouse dispatched Luke Woodhouse in a repeat of their European Championship semi-final last month.

Daryl Gurney, the 2018 Players Champion, aims to pick up from where he left off on Day One when he meets 2023 World Champion Michael Smith.

Gurney averaged 108.8 in a 6-1 demolition of Peter Wright in Friday’s opener, while Smith survived two match darts from Nick Kenny as he scraped through in a decider on Stage Two.

Kim Huybrechts’ reward for his dominant win over in-form Wessel Nijman is a showdown against last year’s World Championship semi-finalist Scott Williams – who defied a 104 average from Gian van Veen on Friday to prevail in a deciding leg.

Nathan Aspinall, who dumped out top seed Chris Dobey with a 6-1 rout in Round One, faces last month’s Czech Darts Open semi-finalist Niels Zonneveld.

Damon Heta, twice a Players Championship event winner this season, comes up against Polish number one Krzysztof Ratajski, while Dutch Championship winner Josh Rock meets European Championship finalist Jermaine Wattimena.

Over on Stage Two, recent Grand Slam quarter-finalist Cameron Menzies faces World Grand Prix semi-finalist Ryan Joyce – who also made the semis of this event 12 months ago.

Fifth seed Dave Chisnall takes on former UK Open champion Andrew Gilding, before Jeffrey De Graaf looks to follow up Friday’s win over Ryan Searle when he meets Thibault Tricole – who dumped out Gerwyn Price on the Main Stage.

Florian Hempel, conqueror of 2017 finalist Jonny Clayton on Friday, takes on a resurgent Dirk van Duijvenbode, while former UK Open champion Danny Noppert plays Stephen Burton – who saw off James Wade in Round One.

Mario Vandenbogaerde’s reward for a First Round scalp of Stephen Bunting is a tie against Challenge Tour Order of Merit winner Connor Scutt – who defeated Grand Slam runner-up Martin Lukeman in his opener.

Ian White aims to follow up Friday’s magnificent victory over seven-time champion Michael van Gerwen when he comes up against reigning World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker.

Former European Champion Ross Smith – who averaged 104.7 in a 6-1 rout of Dimitri van den Bergh – faces ProTour event winner Wesley Plaisier.

Ryan Meikle, who survived five match darts from Gary Anderson before completing a shock 6-5 win, takes on two-time European Tour event winner Martin Schindler.

The action gets under way from 12.45pm GMT, with Second Round matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs and Third Round ties best of 19.
