A clutch of the sport’s household names begin their campaigns at the 2021/22 World Darts Championship on Sunday night.

The main event of the evening features an eagerly-anticipated clash between former World Champion Steve Beaton and history-maker Fallon Sherrock.

Darting stalwart Beaton is making his 31st appearance in a World Championship, having made his debut at Lakeside back in 1992 before going on to win the title four years later.

The Bronzed Adonis is an ever-present at Ally Pally and enjoyed his best run two years ago when he made the Fourth Round, but will be out to atone for last year’s nightmare First Round exit on opening night.

The 57-year-old is tasked with tearing up the script as he takes on ‘The Queen of The Palace’ – who returns to the scene of her ground-breaking success of two years ago.

Sherrock, who defeated Ted Evetts and Mensur Suljovic on her debut to reach the Last 32, has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame and has followed it up by reaching the final of the Nordic Masters and the Quarter-Finals of the Grand Slam this year.

The six-time Women’s Series event winner has proven she has what it takes to thrive on the sport’s biggest stages and will look to create more global headlines by defeating a legend of the sport to keep alive her hopes of gaining an automatic Tour Card.

A fascinating all-German clash sees emerging star Florian Hempel take on PDC Europe Super League winner Martin Schindler.

Hempel, who secured his Tour Card at European Qualifying School in February, has reached the Semi-Finals of a Players Championship event and is set for his debut appearance at Ally Pally.

The former Handball player reached the Last 16 of the European Championship and starts his campaign at the World Championship against two-time World Cup quarter-finalist Schindler – who is searching for his first win here at the third attempt.

Premier League champion Jonny Clayton launches his quest for a first world title with a tie against Irish youngster Keane Barry.

Clayton has enjoyed a remarkable year of success on the televised stage, winning four titles, including the World Grand Prix and Masters.

He heads to the palace as number eight seed and is situated in the same quarter of the draw as Welsh compatriot Gerwyn Price.

Clayton, who has fallen at the third hurdle in his last two World Championship campaigns, opens up against former JDC and BDO World Youth Champion Barry.

Barry secured his first win at the PDC World Championship by edging out Hong Kong’s Royden Lam on Friday in a deciding set, and is now gearing up for the biggest match of his career to date.

The opening match of the night sees Dutch debutant Martijn Kleermaker take on Greek number one John Michael.

Kleermaker missed out on his debut last year after testing positive for Covid-19 and will be determined to make up for lost time.

The former BDO star reached the Last 16 of this year’s UK Open as well as the final of a Players Championship event.

Tour Card holder Michael, meanwhile, is aiming to register his first win at the fourth attempt on this iconic stage and is the 15-time Greek National Champion.

The action gets under way from 12.30pm GMT, with First Round and Second Round matches to be contested over the best five sets, best of five legs per set.

The tie break rule does not apply to First Round matches, meaning the fifth leg of a deciding set would be sudden death, while the final set in matches from Round Two onwards must be won by two clear legs, unless the score reaches 5-5, in which case a sudden-death leg will be played.
