Live Darts on December 28th | World Darts Championship 2024/25 Day 11 Preview and Order of Play
A host of star names resume their World Darts Championship campaigns as the Third Round continues at Alexandra Palace on Saturday.
The tournament has entered its business end on the other side of the Christmas break, and six more fascinating ties are to come across two sessions.
All eyes will be on last year’s runner-up Luke Littler as he returns to the sport’s biggest stage to take on multiple PDC ranking event winner Ian White.
Littler’s landmark run to the final on debut 12 months ago catapulted him into the limelight, and the teenage sensation has not looked back, going on to enjoy a dream first season on the PDC circuit which has seen him claim the Premier League, World Series Finals and Grand Slam titles.
Provisionally ranked world number two, Littler is bidding to cap off his remarkable year by lifting the sport’s most iconic trophy and becoming its youngest ever World Champion.
The Nuke got off and running with a 3-1 victory over Ryan Meikle seven days ago, averaging 100.8 and landing ten 180s before breaking down in tears on stage during his post-match interview.
His next test comes from a veteran of the sport who is competing in his 14th World Championship and has enjoyed a welcome resurgence in 2024.
Former major semi-finalist White benefitted from a First Round bye before dumping out European Champion Ritchie Edhouse 3-1, continuing the form which saw him thrash Michael van Gerwen 6-1 in November’s Players Championship Finals.
Three-time World Champion Van Gerwen steps up his quest to regain the crown when he meets last year’s quarter-finalist Brendan Dolan.
Van Gerwen has competed in all 17 stagings of the World Championship since its move to Ally Pally and captured the Sid Waddell Trophy in 2014, 2017 and 2019.
A winner of more than 150 titles worldwide, including a staggering 47 majors, MVG has enjoyed more success than any other player in this competition and is vying to restore his former glories.
The Dutch icon opened up with a routine straight sets win over debutant James Hurrell eight days ago and will be all too aware of the threat by Dolan, having suffered defeat at the hands of the Northern Irishman in last year’s World Matchplay.
Dolan also has pedigree for pulling off an upset on this stage, having knocked out both Gary Anderson and Gerwyn Price en route to the Last Eight 12 months ago.
The former World Grand Prix finalist has endured a difficult season by his standards, but looked assured in dispatching Hong Kong’s Lok Yin Lee in straight sets before Christmas.
The evening’s opener sees former Masters champion Chris Dobey take on European Tour event winner Josh Rock.
Dobey has reached back-to-back quarter-finals in the sport’s showpiece event but has lost in contrasting fashion, having been whitewashed 5-0 by Michael van Gerwen two years ago, before remarkably squandering a 4-0 lead against Rob Cross on New Year’s Day in 2024.
The former Masters champion has claimed three Players Championship titles this season, while also reaching a further two finals, and began his Ally Pally redemption mission by defeating Dutch debutant Alexander Merkx 3-1.
Rock claimed his first Euro Tour title at the Dutch Championship earlier this year and added a further two Players Championship titles to his CV.
Provisionally ranked inside the world’s top 16, Rock dropped just two legs in seeing off Welsh debutant Rhys Griffin in Round Two.
The afternoon session sees former UK Open champions Nathan Aspinall and Andrew Gilding go head-to-head.
Semi-finalist in each of his first two World Championship appearances in 2019 and 2020, Aspinall has not made it beyond the Third Round since and headed into his seventh World Championship on the back of a turbulent season in which he has continued to battle with injury.
The Asp has failing to reach the quarter-finals of a televised ranking tournament for the first time since 2018 but will be determined to rectify that with a strong run at Ally Pally, having overcome Leonard Gates 3-1 in his opener.
Gilding, the number 21 seed, is through to the Third Round at Ally Pally for the first time in six attempts courtesy of a 3-1 victory over Grand Slam finalist Martin Lukeman.
Scott Williams looks to continue his love affair with the Ally Pally stage when he faces Ricardo Pietreczko – the last German standing in the competition.
Williams also embarked on a ground-breaking run to the semis at Ally Pally last year, thrashing MVG along the way, and marked his return with an impressive 3-1 win over German debutant Niko Springer.
He then dumped out 2018 World Champion Rob Cross in the last session before Christmas and will look to capitalise on home advantage in his bid to reach the Last 16 once again.
Pietreczko came close to pulling off a huge upset at this stage of the tournament last year when he led Luke Humphries 3-1, before eventually going down in a deciding set.
Runner-up in this season’s Flanders Darts Trophy, ‘Pikachu’ brushed aside China’s Xiaochen Zong in straight sets in Round One, before knocking out 28th seed Gian van Veen 3-1.
The opening tie of the afternoon sees former major finalist Ryan Searle take on former World Championship quarter-finalist Ryan Joyce.
Searle is making his seventh consecutive World Championship appearance and has maintained his perfect record of reaching Round Three on each occasion following a blistering 3-0 win over Matt Campbell with a 99.4 average.
Joyce, a semi-finalist in October’s World Grand Prix, backed up his 3-1 win over Darius Labanauskas by dispatching 13th seed Danny Noppert by the same scoreline.
The action gets under way from 12.30pm GMT, with Third Round matches to be contested over the best of seven sets, best of five legs per set.
The final set must be won by two clear legs, unless the score reaches 5-5, in which case a sudden death leg will be played.
