Gerwyn Price and Raymond van Barneveld go head-to-head in a box office battle in Round Three of the World Darts Championship on Tuesday.
A mouth-watering contest sees the world number one face the five-time World Champion in a ‘repeat or revenge’ clash at Alexandra Palace.
The pair met twice in last month’s Grand Slam of Darts, with Van Barneveld claiming a narrow 5-4 win in the Group Stage before pulling off a sensational comeback from 8-3 down to prevail 16-13 in the Quarter-Finals and end Price’s reign as champion.
Price has his sights set on revenge as the decorated duo meet on the sport’s biggest stage for the first time, and the Welshman is under pressure to defend the £500,000 title-winning prize money from 2021 against his world ranking in order to avoid dropping as low as fourth.
Price, runner-up in this year’s World Matchplay and winner of the World Series Finals, came from a set down to defeat Luke Woodhouse in Round Two with a crucial 150 checkout along the way.
The Ice Man has reached at least the Quarter-Final stage in each of his last three World Championship campaigns but has won only two of his 11 previous meetings with Van Barneveld.
Barney finds himself in the Last 32 for the first time since the 2017/18 event after also recovering from losing the opening set to defeat Ryan Meikle 3-1.
The Dutch legend, winner of six PDC major titles, retired from the sport in 2019 but returned to the tour in 2021, winning a Players Championship event and working his way back into the world’s top 32 this year after a magnificent run to the Semi-Finals of the recent Grand Slam.
Van Barneveld boasts a terrific overall record at Ally Pally, finishing runner-up to Phil Taylor in 2009 and going on to reach a further five Semi-Finals, as well as landing two nine-dart finishes.
The match gets under way from around 8.30pm GMT and will be contested over the best of seven sets, with either Ryan Searle or Jose de Sousa awaiting the winner in the Last 16.
