Joe Cullen secured his seventh PDC title at Players Championship 13 with an 8-6 win over Gerwyn Price in the final in Milton Keynes.

Cullen, who won the first Players Championship event of the season in February, doubled his tally for 2021 at the Marshall Arena as he denied the world number one a winning return to competitive action.

Cullen cemented his place at the top of the PDC ProTour Order of Merit by landing the £10,000 top prize, defeating four fellow top 16 stars along the way.

The Bradford ace began the day with a 6-3 victory over Steve West before seeing off Belgium’s Mike De Decker by the same scoreline.

He then thrashed Martin Atkins 6-1 with a 99 average in the Last 32 before edging out Ian White in a last-leg decider with a superb 106 average.

Cullen continued his charge with a 6-4 win over UK Open champion James Wade and sealed his place in the final in emphatic fashion by thrashing Michael van Gerwen 7-2.

Cullen began the final strongly by opening up a 2-0 lead before Price halved the deficit in style with a 122 checkout on the bull.

Price followed it up with a 90 finish in leg four and took the fifth to go in front, but Cullen responded superbly with a 125 checkout on his way to three straight legs to move 5-3 up.

Cullen then stretched his advantage to 7-4, but three missed match darts in leg 12 handed Price a lifeline, which he grabbed with back-to-back legs to trail just 7-6.

Cullen, however, regained his composure to close out victory after two fatal missed doubles from the Welshman.

“I was hoping to win one of the titles this week but I wasn’t expecting it on the first day after such a long lay-off,” said Cullen.

“It felt like a first day back at school, I was very unsure of myself at the start of the day but it’s funny how things work out sometimes.

“I’ve missed the kind of pressure I felt at the end of the final. I fell over the line at the end but the important thing is I found a way to win.”

Price made it back-to-back ProTour finals, having also finished runner-up at Players Championship 8 on March 19, the last time he was in PDC action.

The reigning World Champion battled back from 5-3 down to defeat Joe Murnan 6-5 in his first game of the day, before impressing in victories over Gary Anderson, Steve Beaton and fellow Welshman Jonny Clayton later en route to the final.

Elsewhere on Day One, Premier League runner-up Jose de Sousa produced a 127 average, one of the highest ever recorded in PDC competition, in his 6-0 First Round win over William Borland.

Niels Zonneveld landed a nine-dart finish in the first leg of his Second Round clash with Wade but went on to lose the match 6-2.
