Power-scoring Wright romps to Players Championship Five title

Peter Wright landed six ton-plus averages on his way to claiming the Players Championship Five title with a stunning victory over Gerwyn Price in the final.
The reigning World and Masters Champion produced a scintillating set of displays to claim his third title of 2020, culminating in a 170 checkout to clinch victory over his fellow Premier League star.
The world number two came within the width of the wire of breaking his own streamed record average in Round Two but was forced to settle for a sensational 120.5.
“It’s just the start,” said Wright. “I’m enjoying these darts and we’ve got something in the pipeline to improve them further.
“Who knows what I can win this year? I just take it a leg at a time and that’s all you can do.
“As World Champion, I’ve always got a target on my back but I feel like I’m giving some of the other players the belief that they too can win anything.”
Wright kick-started his run with a 106 average in defeating Darren Webster 6-2 before producing an astonishing display to whitewash Adrian Gray with a 120.5 average, falling narrowly short of a new world record.
He then averaged 106.6 in thrashing former BDO World Champion Scott Mitchell 6-1 before seeing off Ryan Joyce 6-3 with a 103.5 average.
Wright’s only sub-100 average of the day came against three-time Lakeside Champion Glen Durrant but he nonetheless stormed his way into the Semi-Finals with a 6-1 thrashing.
Snakebite then ended the resurgent run of Devon Petersen with a 7-5 success and a 105 average to boot.
The Scottish World Cup winner began the final with a 98 checkout and added a 76 finish to move 2-1 up before Price took out 101 for parity.
Twelve consecutive holds of throw saw the pair locked level at six apiece before Wright landed double nine to edge ahead and sealed victory in magnificent fashion with a 170 checkout.
Price was forced to settle for the runner-up spot for the second time on the ProTour this season, defeating the likes of Kirk Shepherd, Damon Heta, Jamie Lewis and Steve Lennon en route to the final.
Lennon had earlier landed a nine-dart finish in a 6-1 rout of Hong Kong’s Kai Fan Leung with a 110.6 average but was left to rue four missed match darts against Price in the Semi-Finals.
Germany’s Christian Bunse defied a 103 average to knock out world number one Michael van Gerwen in the Last 32 before bowing out to Rob Cross in the next round.
Having suffered four consecutive First Round defeats, South African star Petersen enjoyed a superb run to the Semi-Finals which included a 111.8 average along the way.
