Adrian Lewis announces indefinite break from professional darts
Two-time World Champion Adrian Lewis has announced he will take an indefinite break from professional darts.
Lewis took to social media on Saturday to explain his recent absence from the circuit and revealed he will take an extended sabbatical after more than 20 years as a professional.
The 38-year-old last competed in a PDC event in mid-March, suffering successive First Round exits in Players Championship events, before failing to progress through two European Tour qualifiers.
Back-to-back World Champion in 2011 and 2012, Lewis has dropped to 36th in the Order of Merit, with his last televised ranking title having come at the 2014 UK Open.
The Stoke star ended a three-year wait for a ranking title at Players Championship 20 last July but went on to suffer a string of early exits in TV majors, including a Second Round defeat to Damon Heta at Ally Pally.
He had failed to progress beyond the Last 32 stage of a ranked event this season to date and had fallen more than £20,000 adrift of the provisional qualification places for the World Matchplay.
Explaining his decision, Lewis tweeted:
