Grand Slam of Darts 2023 | Day Five Preview and Order of Play
The Grand Slam of Darts enters the knockout phase on Wednesday with four unmissable Last 16 ties in Wolverhampton.
Following a fascinating and frenetic group stage, the £650,000 ranked major reaches its business end at the Aldersley Leisure Village as a host of big names collide over the extended format.
Matches from the top half of the draw take centre stage on Wednesday, with the headline act featuring a repeat of the iconic 2018 final at this venue.
Gerwyn Price and Gary Anderson will renew their rivalry on the Grand Slam stage, having famously contested a fiery final which saw them come to blows on stage before the Welshman went on to lift his first major title.
The pair also met in the Quarter-Finals a year later, with Price running out a 16-9 winner, before again coming out on top in their most high-profile meeting to date – in the 2021 World Championship final behind closed doors.
Price is now vying for a fourth Grand Slam title in six visits to the Aldersley Leisure Village, and has made a blistering start to proceedings by dropping just two legs en route to topping Group D.
After thrashing Nathan Rafferty 5-1, Price then averaged 110.5 in a 5-0 whitewash of Ryan Searle, before exceeding that with a 112.3 average in a 5-1 rout of Gian van Veen.
Anderson, meanwhile, maintained his incredible record of progressing to the knockout phase, finishing second in Group C to make it 16 knockout qualifications from 16 Grand Slam appearances since 2007.
However, the Scot has suffered Second Round exits in his two most recent Grand Slam campaigns and is without a win over Price in a televised event since February 2020.
The final match of the night sees reigning World Grand Prix champion Luke Humphries take on nine-dart hero Ryan Searle.
Humphries, semi-finalist here 12 months ago, is looking to double his tally of major titles in little over a month and has made a clinical start, dropping just four legs on the way to topping Group C.
The five-time European Tour event winner averaged above 100 in each of his three group wins and has reached at least the Quarter-Final stage in each of his last three televised ranking majors.
Searle finds himself in the knockout phase of the Grand Slam for the first time in what is his fourth appearance, having sealed his progression in sensational style on Monday.
The world number 16 became only the sixth player in the history of the competition to achieve a nine-dart finish, which clinched a decisive 5-3 win over Nathan Rafferty in their Group D shootout.
Elsewhere, three-time Grand Slam runner-up James Wade comes up against Masters champion Chris Dobey.
Recent European Championship finalist Wade dumped out defending champion Michael Smith with a 5-1 rout to top Group A and reach the knockout stages for the 15th time in 16 appearances.
Dobey overcame Jonny Clayton 5-3 in their Group B shootout to seal second spot and reach the knockout phase for the first time since his debut campaign at the Wolves Civic in 2016 – where his run was ended by Wade in the Quarter-Finals.
Dobey defeated Wade 10-8 in July’s World Matchplay and a further victory over ‘The Machine’ would see him reach a fourth consecutive televised ranking Quarter-Final.
The opening match of the night sees Northern Ireland’s number one Josh Rock take on Polish number one – Krzysztof Ratajski.
Rock enjoyed a superb Group B campaign, topping the pile with maximum points courtesy of victories over Dobey, Clayton and Berry van Peer for the combined loss of just four legs.
The 2022 World Youth Champion is now vying to go one step further than his debut campaign here last year, which saw him land a nine-darter in the Last 16, but only to be denied by Michael van Gerwen.
Rataski is through to the knockout phase for the first time in five years after finishing second in Group A with four points, thanks to wins over Wade and Nathan Girvan.
The two-time European Tour event winner is now bidding to reach his first TV ranking Quarter-Final since the 2021 World Grand Prix.
The action gets under way from 7pm GMT, with Second Round matches to be contested over the best of 19 legs.
