Darren Webster was left with a suspected broken nose after he became the victim of a violent, unprovoked attack in Barnsley on Saturday.
The Norwich thrower had participated in a Players Championship event at the Barnsley Metrodome – a venue adjacent to Barnsley FC’s Oakwell stadium – where Barnsley had faced local rivals Sheffield United earlier in the day.
Webster had left the venue following a Last 32 defeat to Max Hopp when he was confronted by a group of football fans, who had approached and asked whether he was from Sheffield.
The 49-year-old replied that he was darts a player from Norwich and before being able to reveal the darts shirt from under his jacket, was headbutted by one thug, leaving him with blood streaming from his nose.
Webster, who took to social media to explain the incident, fears his nose is broken but has vowed to compete in Sunday’s Players Championship event.
The police are said to be reviewing CCTV footage from the area in an attempt to identify the attacker, who Webster described as a bald male in his mid-40s.
