Jay Stansfield and Marvin Ducksch both finished with 10 league goals, while the squad gained valuable experience of the demands of the division.
Now, however, progression is the expectation. Davies remains in charge and has spoken openly about building a club capable of reaching and staying in the Premier League. His continuity could prove important as Birmingham look to turn last season’s foundations into a genuine promotion push.
The summer has brought further squad refinement. Jhon Solis has made his move permanent after an encouraging loan spell, while Dael Fry has arrived to strengthen the defence and James Beadle has extended his loan. There have also been departures, including Kyogo Furuhashi, who struggled for regular goals last season.
The Championship, though, offers little margin for error. Relegated Premier League clubs such as West Ham, Wolves and Burnley bring significant resources and experience, while established promotion contenders such as Middlesbrough will also be targeting the top six. Birmingham are nevertheless viewed as one of the leading challengers.
