Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa meet in Salzburg on Wednesday with the first major European trophy of the new club season at stake. The UEFA Super Cup brings together the reigning Champions League and Europa League winners, giving both sides an immediate chance to add silverware to remarkable European campaigns.

PSG arrive as favourites after a season in which they established themselves as Europe’s dominant force. Luis Enrique’s side are looking to retain the Super Cup after winning last year’s edition, and they possess the greater experience of high-pressure European finals. Their attacking quality, technical control and depth make them a formidable proposition, particularly with key World Cup players such as Ousmane Dembélé and Fabián Ruiz back in the squad.

There is also an intriguing subplot involving Lucas Digne, who left Villa for PSG during the summer. New signing Maghnes Akliouche could also make his debut, adding another creative option to an already formidable attack.

Villa, however, will not simply be making up the numbers. Unai Emery’s team secured the Europa League with a convincing 3-0 victory over Freiburg and arrive with the confidence of having won a major European trophy of their own. This will be only their second appearance in the Super Cup, and Emery’s tactical discipline could make Villa awkward opponents for a PSG side still finding its rhythm after the summer break.

The biggest challenge for Villa is replacing some of the influence lost during the transfer window. Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Digne have departed, while João Gomes and Johan Manzambi are among the new arrivals expected to help reshape the midfield.

The teams are also familiar with one another, having met in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2025, when PSG progressed on aggregate. That history should add another layer of tension to an already intriguing contest.

PSG have the stronger squad and greater recent experience on this stage, but Villa’s organisation and Emery’s ability to devise a specific game plan could keep the match close. Expect PSG to dominate possession, while Villa look to exploit transitions and punish any defensive openings. On paper, the French champions have the edge—but the Super Cup may offer Villa their first opportunity of the season to upset the established European order.
