Cameron Menzies has issued an apology following his furious outburst in defeat to Charlie Manby at the World Darts Championship on Monday.

Menzies was beaten in a deciding set by 20-year-old debutant Manby – who twice came from a set down to snatch victory at Alexandra Palace.

Menzies struggled to contain his emotions at the end of the contest, repeatedly punching the underside of the drinks table in rage before referee Kirk Bevins stepped in to direct the Scotsman off stage.

The 36-year-old was seen with bloody hands following the incident and is likely to face sanctions from the sport’s governing body.

Menzies has since issued a statement in which he apologises for his actions, citing a recent family tragedy.

“First of all, I would like to apologise for what happened,” said Menzies. “I am sorry that I reacted in the manner that I did.

“It’s not an excuse, but I have had a lot of things on my mind recently and I suppose it all just became too much at the end.

“It has not been an easy time for me with my uncle Gary passing away recently. I saw him four days before he died and he gave a look which told he much he thought of me. He treated me like a son.

“Had I won the game against Charlie, my second match would have been on the day of Gary’s funeral and that has not been lost on me in recent days.

“Let me say again, that’s no excuse for what I did on the stage. It was the wrong thing to do and I don’t want it to take anything away from Charlie. He played well and deserved his win.

“This is not how I would like people to view me. Yes I can get emotional at times, but not like that and that wasn’t right.”

Menzies made a magnificent start to the match, firing in five 180s on his way to sealing the first set in a decider despite missing 12 darts at doubles.

Manby unleashed a huge celebration as he seals the second set in a deciding leg to get back on level terms, before Menzies took the third to regain the upper-hand.

Yorkshire’s Manby converted double 16 with his first dart to seal the fourth set in a decider and send it all the way, landing a crucial 120 checkout to break throw before eventually sealing victory on double one.
