The Players Championship Finals draw to a close in Minehead on Sunday as the final eight face off for the season’s penultimate major silverware.

The 16th staging of the Players Championship Finals is heading for a gripping climax, with three current major winners and a host of heavy scorers in the running for the £120,000 top prize.

The afternoon session plays host to the quarter-final ties on the main stage at Butlin’s Minehead, before the semi-finals and final follow later in the evening.

Luke Humphries is bidding to become only the second player in the tournament’s history to successfully retain the title, and the world number one faces a familiar quarter-final opponent in Ryan Joyce.

Humphries, who has recently surrendered the World Grand Prix and Grand Slam titles, is out to defend major silverware for the first time and head into next month’s World Championship on the ultimate high.

The 29-year-old has bounced back from his shock Group Stage exit at the Grand Slam a fortnight ago by defeating Gabriel Clemens, Raymond van Barneveld and Damon Heta to reach the Last Eight of this event for the third consecutive year.

Joyce finds himself at this stage of the competition for the second successive year and will be eyeing revenge for his crushing 11-3 defeat to Humphries in last year’s semi-finals, as well as a five-set whitewash in the semi’s of October’s World Grand Prix.

Joyce, who has seen off Karel Sedlacek, Cameron Menzies and Martin Schindler so far, is one win away from a return to the world’s top 32 – which would ensure a seeded position at the World Championship in place of Van Barneveld.

Another blockbuster clash sees teenage sensation Luke Littler and Belgian star Mike De Decker collide in a repeat of their epic Grand Slam contest little over a week ago.

Littler recovered from 9-7 down to snatch a 10-9 victory in the Last 16, and the rest is history as the 17-year-old went on to lift his first major ranking title in rampant fashion.

Littler has seemingly picked up from where he left off in Wolverhampton, extending his unbeaten run to ten matches courtesy of wins over Rob Cross, Ritchie Edhouse and Danny Noppert for the combined loss of just five legs and a tournament average of 107.5.

Now provisionally world number four, ‘The Nuke’ looks to continue his unstoppable form against the reigning World Grand Prix champion – who is appearing in only his second major quarter-final.

De Decker has been equally ruthless en route to the Last Eight, thrashing Richard Veenstra and Ian White 6-1 and 6-0 respectively, before brushing aside Niels Zonneveld 10-4, all on Stage Two.

Meanwhile, World Championship semi-finalist Scott Williams and former European Champion Ross Smith go head-to-head in a battle of two power-scorers.

Smith has put a below-par recent run of form behind him to move into his fourth major ranking quarter-final courtesy of emphatic wins over Dimitri van den Bergh, Wesley Plaisier and Andrew Gilding, remarkably dropping only three legs along the way.

Williams is into his first televised quarter-final since that sensational run at Ally Pally in January and has come alive again at the business end of the season by dispatching Gian van Veen, Kim Huybrechts and Jeffrey de Graaf.

A resurgent Dirk van Duijvenbode marks his second major quarter-final of the year with a clash against Challenge Tour star Connor Scutt.

Van Duijvenbode, who also reached this stage of last month’s European Championship, is back on an upward trajectory following a lengthy battle with a shoulder injury which saw him drop out of the world’s top 16.

The Dutch ace has put Callan Rydz, Florian Hempel and Jermaine Wattimena to the sword this weekend and is now targeting a first major ranking semi-final appearance since the 2022 European Championship.

Scutt, meanwhile, finds himself in uncharted territory after winning through to a first televised quarter-final as a non Tour Card holder.

This season’s Challenge Tour Order of Merit winner, who also featured in the Grand Slam, will return to the circuit full-time in 2025 but has given himself a terrific head start thanks to a dream run this weekend.

The 28-year-old has seen off Grand Slam finalist Martin Lukeman, Belgian veteran Mario Vandenbogaerde and 2018 champion Daryl Gurney and will fancy his chances of another notable scalp.

The evening’s line-up also features the PDC World Youth Championship final between Dutch duo Gian van Veen and Jurjen van der Velde.

Van Veen, who reached the quarter-finals of the recent Grand Slam, is bidding to go one better than his runner-up spot 12 months ago, while fellow Tour Card holder Van der Velde is looking to add this title to his three Development Tours and two Challenge Tours since 2021.

The action gets under way from 1pm GMT, with quarter-final matches to be contested over the best of 19 legs and semi-finals and the final best of 21.
