Luke Humphries regains Czech Darts Open title in emphatic fashion
Luke Humphries secured the Czech Darts Open title for the second time courtesy of an 8-1 demolition of Kim Huybrechts in the final in Prague on Sunday.
Humphries, who initially claimed this title in 2022, stormed to his second European Tour triumph of the season at the PVA Expo in emphatic fashion.
The world number one dropped just 11 legs in five matches en route to glory, registering a ton-plus average in each as he racked up a seventh European Tour title.
The 29-year-old began his campaign with a trio of 6-2 wins over Ritchie Edhouse, Gian van Veen and his World Grand Prix nemesis Mike De Decker with averages of 100.7, 106.8 and 103.1.
Humphries then came through a scintillating semi-final against Luke Littler, averaging 108.5 to halt the 17-year-old’s hopes of a third European Tour title of the year.
Humphries seized the early initiative in the final by clinching the opening two legs, before Huybrechts halved the deficit.
After restoring his two-leg lead to 3-1, Humphries conjured up three consecutive 12-darters to assume complete control – including a clinical 132 checkout on the bull in leg five.
Huybrechts had no answer to Humphries’ relentless brilliance, and the World Champion added a further two unanswered legs to power to victory with a 105.5 average.
“When I beat Ritchie Edhouse on Saturday I felt good, but I felt I needed a spark, and I found it today,” said Humphries.
“When I beat Gian I felt that spark again, but I still know there’s another level in me, and I believe I can get better.
“It’s nice to bounce back [from the World Grand Prix], because when you lose in major finals it’s not easy; it does hurt you, so this is a nice way to finish my ProTour season.
“I’m going to come back next year and I’m going to work harder. I’m going to change things and I’m going to win more – that’s my commitment to the game!”
Huybrechts enjoyed an unexpected run to a first European Tour final since 2017 after receiving a late call-up to the event via the reserve list.
The Belgian admitted: “I’m happy to reach another final.
“I wasn’t even in this event originally. I lost in qualification and now I’m in the final!
“This game came too early for me. Last week I was struggling to make the World Championship, so to be in a final against the world number one, it was always going to be tough.
“Give me another year or 18 months – when I have this flow in me, then I will give him a game!”
Huybrechts overcame Luke Woodhouse, Pavel Drtil, Jermaine Wattimena and Niels Zonneveld to pocket £12,000 in prize money, narrowly missing out on a place in the European Championship in the process.
The 38-year-old fired in a ten-darter to defeat Woodhouse in a dramatic Second Round decider on Saturday, which he backed up with 6-4 successes against Host Nation Qualifier Drtil and Wattimena.
Huybrechts then survived a match dart in defeating a crestfallen Zonneveld in the semi-finals, denying the Dutchman a place at next week’s European Championship.
Zonneveld would have replaced Dirk van Duijvenbode in the 32-player field with victory over Huybrechts, having also defeated Dave Chisnall, Ricardo Pietreczko and Jonny Clayton to reach a maiden European Tour semi-final.
Meanwhile, Littler’s run to the semi-finals was a record-breaking one, as the teenage superstar produced averages of 110, 116, 110 and 106 across a remarkable weekend.
Following a 6-1 demolition of Nathan Aspinall in Round Two, the Premier League champion powered in a 116.51 average – a new tournament record – to deny Damon Heta in a thrilling Last 16 tie.
Littler then thrashed Michael van Gerwen 6-1 in a pulsating quarter-final encounter as he defied a 112.19 average from the Dutchman – the highest losing average in European Tour history.
