Gary Anderson ended a ten-year wait for a European Tour title by claiming glory at the European Darts Grand Prix in Sindelfingen with an 8-6 win over Ross Smith in the final.
Competing in just his fourth European Tour event since bringing a seven-year hiatus from the circuit to an end in 2023, Anderson returned to the winner’s enclosure at the Glaspalast.
The two-time World Champion came through four close-run contests on Sunday to capture the title and climb three places to 21st in the Order of Merit in the process.
He began the day with a 6-4 win over rival Gerwyn Price in the Last 16 with a 102.5 average, before surviving five match darts from Josh Rock to snatch a dramatic 6-5 victory in the quarter-finals.
The Scot then dethroned reigning champion Rob Cross with a 7-5 success in the semis to reach his first Euro Tour final since 2015.
It was Smith who took the opening leg of the final with a 106 checkout, while Anderson fired in finishes of 72 and 94 en route to levelling the contest at five apiece.
Smith edged back in front but crucially missed a dart to go two clear as Anderson stepped in to restore parity, before piling in a timely 121 checkout to break throw and go 7-6 up.
Smith looked set to send the match to a decider, but only to squander seven darts at doubles and gift Anderson victory on double ten.
“It’s been a very long time,” reflected Anderson. “Many years ago when I played in the European Tour the crowd was just starting to grow and since then it’s just got bigger and bigger.
“Wherever you go now, people want to play darts and watch darts; these crowds are incredible.
“I don’t know how I’ve won it tonight; my last three games I’ve never been as lucky in darts.”
Smith was denied a first European Tour title but enjoyed a rollercoaster run to his first European Tour final which included three last-leg deciders on Sunday.
He survived ten missed match darts in total, six of which from Ritchie Edhouse in the Last 16 and one from Damon Heta in the quarter-finals.
Michael van Gerwen then squandered three match darts in their semi-final clash, twice busting his score in the latter stages as Smith snatched a 7-6 victory.
“I can’t complain, I’m gutted but I’ll be back on the practice board and keep working hard,” said Smith.

“I’ll take getting to the final all day long and hopefully will go one better next time.”
Cross had knocked out world number one Luke Humphries 6-2 in the quarter-finals, while Van Gerwen ended home hopes by defeating Gabriel Clemens 6-3.
